Thoughts/Opinions on Oil Change's?
Yeah, I recommend Blackstone Labs too. I've been very happy with their service and reports. Not only do you get the nitty gritty details in the report, but they talk to you in plain English in their comments section telling you what they think is going on. I've been getting a TBN done on my oil analysis since I started with them to find the right oil change interval. A TBN is a specific test in addition to the normal test which more or less tells you how much more life your oil has in it. I've completed the third oil change and test on my '05 PW since I bought her this past January and we're up to a 7K interval on Mobil1 Synthetic now. The next oil change and test should tell me if I can go higher or should stick with the 7K.
I've posted my last three tests on my site at: http://trucks.pcwize.com (left side near the top as Oil Analysis 1, 2, and 3). They're images, and modern browsers resize the image to fit the window, so if you can't read the text, click on the report and it'll expand to full legible size.
This will give you an example of what you can expect from these guys. I love 'em.

Pat Bedard of "Car and Driver" did an article on this awhile back.
Basically, the change interval has nothing to do with oil breakdown. It's the rate at which your engine contaminates the oil via blow by. Some engines do better than others and of course the interval would need to shrink as your engine ages.
Every 3,000 is about the minimum it would ever need to get down to though unless your engine is totally shot.

The only way your gonna see if the oil is bad ? lol.. is have it tested. you cant tell by looks and smell ,taste.. LOL...love people who says that.. dino oil and if you read the book that came with your truck most only change the oil filter at 3 grand then change oil at 7500.. as far as UK changing at 12 grand could be a cost savings....amsoil change at 15,000 or 1 year which ever comes first , change oil filter at 3,000 or use there Eaa filters never change till 1yr or 15 grand..

The Eaa filter is AMSOIL's performance air filter, it uses Nanofibers instead of cotton gaze like k&n does. no oil needed eather just hose or blow it out and put it back in

As others have said, getting your used oil analyzed in a lab is the only true measure of how well your oil holds up. I just changed my oil last weekend and sent samples in to both Blackstone Labs and Oil Analyzers Inc. After I get the results I will choose one of the labs for future tests. I intend to analyze the oil at every oil change until I determine the optimum change interval based on the TBN, soot content, etc.
One thing you can be sure of: If you are changing oil (in a modern engine) at 3,000 miles you are wasting money and oil. Even the cheapest non-synthetic oil should be good for at least 6,000 miles. My wife drives a leased BMW, and the manufacturer doesall the maintenance at no cost to us. It came from the factory with Castrol synthetic oil, and they didn't change it until 12,000 miles (when the vehicle computer indicated it wastime for an oil change). Since BMW owns the vehicle and gets its back at the end of the lease, it's in their best interest to maintain it properly.
You guys are saying pretty much the same thing, i read in the article. i found it somewhat amazing that in the UK they change their oils every 12,000 miles....that sounds real good, if it doesn't damage my engine.
