Thoughts/Opinions on Oil Change's?
I had some down time at work today, i did a little internet browsing on oil change durations. And it seems that in the UK, instead of changing their oils every 3K miles, they change their's every 12K miles....
And suppposedly, Amsoil according to their website having been saying this for a number of years...
So my question is this, 25 years ago when we only had regular oil to contend with, it was in our best interest to change it every 3K miles. Fast forward to 2007, with the introduction of Synthetic oils, are we in a overkill mode changing our oils every 3K miles?

RE: Thoughts/Opinions on Oil Change's?
I think the dealers and all brands are more concerned with drumming up $$$$$$$$ with oil changes, I'm of the old school days, I only change my oil when its dirty, not by mileage or time.
I do use mobil one syythetic, and I encur a lot of miles and use out of my truck..

Just another little thought on this one.....................???????
How come some of the modern European cars, specify 30,000 mile service intervals, such as the Audi TT???????
This is to include changing the oil and filters?
The oil doesn't get changed till then.
Oil companies and $ come into mind.
Al.

I change mine every 3000 and use a full synthetic, mobil 1 usually, unless I catch a good sale on another name brand.
I have found that since putting in my K&N CAI, that the oil is starting to get dirty about that time anyway. I don't care what ANY companies filter test reports say, you increase airflow, you also get more dirt into the system that eventually ends up in the oil. I've been using after-market, higher end filters and CAI's for almost 20 years, and the better the airflow, the more dirt gets in, it's inevitable, and the price you pay for better performance, so I change every 3000 miles.
