a
Alot of different answers here. Would anyone venture going 10K miles between oil changes with a good synthetic?

It appears that they did a good job for you. It looks like you went from 5W-30 to a 5W-20 weight oil. Any reason why? Was it recommended for your engine?
No it's always had 5W20 (per the manual), my handwriting sucks so they either fat fingered it or my two looked like a 3. It was just a typo on their part.

That's what I'm shooting for. 10K or better. I had 5,352 miles on the last oil interval and had a TBN of 4.6. When it gets close to 1 (like 1.5), that will be as long as I go on an interval. You can contrast this with the oil the previous owner put in (Penzoil) which only ran 3,984 miles and had a TBN of 2.4.

Learn to pull up the 'engine hours' display on your digital trip odometer readout.

Don't change the oil at less than 500 hours
but if oil analysis shows it to be acceptable go as long as 1500 hours.

If using the short oil filter
it will be good for a minimum of 1000 hours unless nearly all of that is offroad in dusty conditions.

If using the long oil filter
it will be good for a minimum of 1500 hours.

Everyone spends a certain amount of money on oil changes
and in general it is better to change the oil more often
and the oil filter less often
to maximize benefit from the money spent.

That's a good point. I'll start tracking that too.

Interesting comments. How does one go about bringing up the "Hours"?
You mentioned a "Short oil Filter" "Long oil filter" I didn't know we had an option for oil filters. Which manufacturer makes both of these oil filters?

I don't believe it's wise to let it go that long, even if the only miles are at freeway speeds for long duration. Not sure why Europe would be any different. Is this a choice they're making, or do the manufacturers specify different intervals over there? The latter would seem unlikely. My truck is driven short distances for the most part (not much more than 800 miles in a month), so I'll continue the 3K interval. BTW, I've also read that synthetics DO NOT extend the interval, since the oil is contaminated at the same rate regardless of oil type. Synthetics resist heat degradation and have some other benefits, but several articles I've read state the change interval should be the same for real dead lizards or synthetic ones. So, I'll also continue to use Pennzoil's Hi-Mileage 5w-30. Just my$0.02
