'08 Ram 1500 Remote Start
Just bought a new Ram and had a question about installing a remote starter.

is that all I would need to buy? and are these Mopar ones a plug-in module I can do myself, or does it require splicing and key programming?
Dealer wants $575 for what they are telling me is an OEM remote starter installed. Sounded a little high. Does anyone suggest going aftermarket such as Viper, Python, Clifford from a store such as Best Buy or Circuit City?
thanks for any help.

mine was around $240, cause they had to like...put a bypass in or something.
the remote starter brand is "autopage". it's pretty sweet, and works pretty damn far too.
edit: i jsut saw you said the dealer quoted you that price. screw that man. oem ones aren't nearly as good (range-wise) imo. go to a highly reputable car stereo place. i

That kit does include all that you need to install it, but the keys will have to be programmed by the dealer. And IMO the price that the dealer quoted you is high. The only problem with adding an aftermarket system is that you need to make sure that it will work with the "can bus" electronics of the truck. I know some people that have had problems getting all the correct wiring connections.

also Parts/Service - is it something I can install myself? I'm pretty handy, but definitely don't want to screw this thing up. Wouldn't this system come with a couple remotes? I've read on here about programming my current key to work by holding down both unlock/lock buttons, but I asked the dealer (service dept) about that and they didn't know what I was talking about...
For that money I would do aftermarket, but let the "experts" install it. I had one put in my 05 Hemi, $200 installed with the optional door locks so I did not have to carry my original key fob.
I think that this is something that you could do, but from the description, it looks like it comes with 2 new keys. If that is the case, the dealer will have to program them. Or they will at least have to enable the remote start feature....I have not done this on a 2008 yet so I may not know what I am talking about... LOL

Here's a OEM kit on ebay...it's about $190 shipped. You could always just buy the kit and have the dealer install it....or install yourself and have them cut and program the keys. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2008-...mZ250205008311

I just read the instructions and there will be some things that the dealer will have to program fo the system to work porperly. It does not look that hard, but there are some things that cannot be done at home. If anyone wants the instructions, Pm me your email address......DAVID
