2005 Ram Front End Rattle/Clunking (AT LAST FIXED TODAY)
really? Man,I would think with the dealer having the truck for two weeks total they would have found it. I cant seem to pin point which side of the front end thenoise is coming from. I will try those tips though
I have an 05 1 wheel drive ram 1500 and I just had to replace the swaybar end links. I tracked it down the dealer had no idea they could hear it they checked the whole front end could hear it but could not figure it out. They wanted to start changing stuff and I said dont think so not with me footing the bill. So I went home got under itgot my dad to bounce on it and took the sway bar loose and the passenger side end link was shot. so I replaced and the noise was gone. I replaced both even though the driver side seemed to be ok. I could have sworn it would be the driver side that was bad but the sound must have been carrying over. Maybe that will help if not good luck!
I have the same problem with my '05. While it was under warranty, had the dealer look at it and he said he didn't hear it but poked a hole in the ball joint boots and squirted grease in there. Turns out that it only clunks like that when the temperature is below 50 degrees. When it goes down to single digits, sounds like the front end is going to fall off. I know it isn't the calipers as stated earlier because it does it even with the brakes on. I'm going to follow this post now because it sounds like it's an '05 thing.
I have an 03. When it's really cold outside and I drive over uneven pavement, like a driveway, I hear all kinds of clunking noises. Put the truck inside for a bit to thaw out and it's fine again. I would love to know what this. All I've figured out is it seems to be related to moisture, snow and ice.
Mine does it in all weather all the times. ALSO SWAJ, where are the swaybar links/ends? Also when you and your dad found the issue and replaced it could you tell that was the problem before you fixed it? Or was it just luck that happened to be it? Could you generate the noise by grabbing on to it or anything??

You bought a truck with warranty and they cant fix it. You have gone above and beyond what you should have. Time for them to step up and purchase the proper tools to get the job done.

Good luck, make sure to post up what it is when you find it. I have an 05 as well and this noise hasnt developed for me yet, if it does it wont take long for it to irritate the crap out of me.
Cableguy the sway bar end links I am not sure if that is the proper name for them but the guy at the part store knew what I was referring to. But they are where the sway bar connects to the lower control arm. I thought it was a shock at first took out the shocks still did it. Made sure everything was tight still did it. Could not move anything and duplicate the sound. Then I took the sway bar loose from the frame where it had some play and the link made a nasty popping sound like the ball joint that is in it was completely shot. But as far as moving something by hand and replicating the noise I was unsuccessful.
My truck is an 03 3500 single wheel. I just got my truck back yesterday from a shop and they could not figure it out. I have 2 knocking sounds. First one sounds like a rock is in the hubcap. It comes and goes. Yes....I've checked all hubcaps but no rock. The sound seems to be coming from the drivers side front area. The second noise penetrates right through to my floor board and I can actually feel it through my feet. Sounds like a part of the exhaust system is banging right under my feet onto the bottom of the cab. I thought it may have been a worn body mount bushing. The only thing the shop found is they were able to turn one body mount bolt one full turn. Did not fix the problem. I've recently all within one month replaced the shocks, tires, upper and lower ball joints, and front ujoints. Someone on this forum mentioned to check the rubber sleeves on the overload springs at the back. When the sun comes up today I'll go look at this myself. THIS KNOCKING SOUND DRIVES NUTS. If anyone figures this out.....please post the answer. Thanks everyone.

You should suggest to the dealer that they buy one of these.

I can't get that link to work, what exactly is the link to?
Thank you all so much for the help, tips and support. I hope they can fix this soon as it drives me nuts. In the past I have always treated my rigsas if they were goldand still had issues with them. SO when I bought a brand new truck "THE RAM"I though this one would never have anything like this. I guess its just my luck LOL. Please keep the ideas flowing on this forum so we can all track down this issue once and for all. I am really glad to hear I am not alone here. I'm starting to wonder if this will be a recall in the future once we do locate it. I'm pretty sure if I could find a shop with a SHAKER MACHINE like they used in the old days you could simulate the issue easy with one of those.
ALSO REMMY,I CANNOT GET THE LINK ABOVE TO WORK EITHER. One thing that cought my eye in the link above is the words CHASSIE EAR. The service advisor did say they hooked up something called chassie ears and could not pin point the location of the noise.
