Oil Change Indicator
When is the oil change indicator supposed to pop up? Mine is already calling for an oil change at 4 weeks old and 2500 miles! The regular oil change interval is supposed to be 6000 miles, but I was going to change it at 5000. I know the truck was built back in 2007, so is there a time thing as well as a mileage thing?
Also, why is the filter so small? WalMart didn't have a Mopar oil filter to fit it (didn't even list it), but they had Fram, and Super Tech (WalMart) and Motorcraft. The 4.7 uses the same filter as my Explorer Sport Trac 4.0 V6! The Motorcraft is supposed to be very good, and Fram is not, but Super Tech is supposed to be good, too, so I got a Super Tech for it, and 5W30 Pennzoil Platinum.

I thought someone would comment on my choice of oil or how long I have gone without changing the oil! 2500 miles on the factory oil! And using 5W-30 instead of the factory 5W-20! And with a WalMart filter, too!
By the way, are there any problems using 5W-30 instead of 5W-30? The engine does not have MDS since it is a 4.7L. I already have the 5W-30, and 5W-20 just feels too thin for South Texas summers.

Dude due to my vehicle being a 02, my oil change indicator is my odometer........can't even offer you any input on the oil filer either...Don't worry though, one of the others will chime in shortly.
Dang! you guys go a long time without changeing oil & filters. I use Casterol 5-30 High mileage (75,000 mi or more) and Mopar filters and i change it about every 3,000mi. I would never go that long w/o changeing oil/filter.

On conventional oil you want to change the oil & filter at or about 2500-3000 miles... If you use synthetic oil you can go up to 4000-5000 miles depending on how you drive. Amsoil claims are higher but you need to send samples in to them and have the oil condition verified... I know several people who live breath Amsoil... I myself use Moble1 full sythetic and Fram HP-1 Race filter... with over 1200,000 miles I have had ZERO issues to date... No sludge what so ever and the ring lands look like new with no ridge on the cylinder bore. Very very clean.
I change my oil every 4500-5000 miles.

The owners manual says change the oil every 6000 miles or less. No mention is made of synthetics, although Dodge has to know that a lot of people use them. The owners manual says:
I will probably keep under that limit no matter what the oil does, just to make sure the lifetime warranty stays in effect, just in case Dodge really does still exist 10 years from now!
The reason I said I expected a comment on how far between changes is that some on here advocate the first oil change at five hundred miles, or maybe a thousand.
² Under no circumstances should oil change intervals
exceed 6,000 miles (10,000 km) or 6 months, whichever
comes first.
