Default Are gas guages ever going to be right?

At 7/8 full, trip meter says 100 miles, so I'm thinking damn! I'm going to 800miles out of this tank! (not really, but still hopeful)
At 1/2 full, trip meter say 250 miles, hmmm, not as good as it looked earlier, but maybe I'll get 500 miles out of this tank if I drive the same the rest of the way.
At 1/4 full, trip meter says 350 miles, Reality is setting in...the meter is really moving thru the guage now!

At Low Fuel light, trip meter says 400 miles.

Why does the guage move slower at the top of the range and flys thru the lower range?

Is the automotive industry ever going to make a fuel guage that actually shows the true level of fuel left in the damn tank!

Mine is pretty accurate actually. I think the other day i pushed it to wear i had 1 mile left and yeah it was pretty damn close. Maybe there is something wrong with urs. But yes at the full mark mine does move slower but that is because ur fuel sensor is only made to go exactly from the F line to the E line. And when u fill it all the way u throw it past the F line so it sticks at the top until it gets to where the F line would be. Make sense?

When mine is on the center of the E line I have 14 Litres (3.6 gallons) left.

How do you know?

I always get it filled up when the low gas light comes on. I can usually only get 23gallons into the tank. Supposed to be a 26gallon tank.If I go down all the way i can go another 60 miles or so.

Mine drops off much faster in the last 1/4 tank than the rest of the tank too. I rode mine until it was centered on the E and still had 3 gallons left in it too. (I know because it only took 23 gallons).

Maybe when/if they start making the gauge go off a tank weight sensor it will be accurate. As it is now, the gauge functions fine. You shouldn't be pushing it to the limit anyway. Bad for the fuel filter. When the gauge gets low, fill it.

Why is it bad for the filter?? Does the intake for fuel float in the tank, or is it fixed at the bottom of the tank? If it is fixed at the bottom, then you can suck bad stuff at any time, if you ride on rough roads you will ingest contaminates all the time.

I judged by how much it takes to fill it when it's dead centered on the E. I know that there is probably some overfill but it has to be somewhat accurate.

Mines completely whack as well...at a three quarters, I'm down 4 gallons, at half I'm down eleven gallons, at a quarter im down thirteen gallons, and at empty when the light goes off, I'm down twenty, leaving 6 gallons remaining in the tank. At least it's consistant, but it sure confuzzled me when I first got the truck. And when I pull into my driveway, which is on a slight incline, I lose an eighth of a tank or more because the fuel sloshes to the back of the tank. It amuses me when I start up the truck and the fuel alarm dings, then I back out of the driveway and the needle goes up and the fuel light turns off.
