hook the power wires directly to the battery for the best results. this will help to keep the stray rf waves from damaging your main computer.

it only came with around 3ft of wire so i was hoping to get an alternative hookup point so i didnt have to splice wires together to make them longer, is it that much worse is i hook it to like the ciggarette lighter or anything like that

The big problem with not hooking it to the battery is you'll pick up alternator noise, especially if you use the cigarette port.

I went to radio shack and brought a plug for the ciggarete adapter and then plugged the wires into that. Works perfect and it shuts off when the truck shuts off.. No ground issues or noise.

a plug for the ciggarette adaptor? like you just wire it to something that plugs right into the lighter?
