Default Cold Air Intake Questions

I just bought a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad cab 4x4. I am intersted in putting in a Cold Air Intake (probably K&N) to get better gas mileage. I do alot of highway miles and every little bit of gas mileage helps. Has anyone put one in? What kind of results are you getting? Is there a big difference is noise? Does it void your manufactors warranty?

Like many people have posted, the search button is your friend. : )

On that engine, you should get a little more power in the top end of your RPM's. Noise shouldn't be too bad if that's your only mod. Fuel economy might improve, but it really depends on how you drive.

I got mine from here: http://www.autoanything.com/air-intakes/20A50096A1.aspx

i wouldnt mod your truck with bolts on for MPG purposes. usualy people mod there truck for hp/tq gains and mpgs is just a benefit. your not going to noitce huge mpgs gains maybe .5-1 if you drive conservativly..... anyways just find one that you like the looks of and one that removes the hemihat/airbaffle. the hemi hat is the biggets restriciton in the intake system. just ask yourself which look you like better chrome or black. i personally got the volant system because i liked how the filter is enclosed to keep the elements out. gets air from under the passenger side headlight and works great. not to loud and looks/works great. Only problem is if you have a hemi volant doesnt make a system for the 5.7l that removes the airbaffle/hemi hat. look around the site. best part is they take all of 10 minutes to install and if your dealer has a problem with it you can put the stock system back on in the same amount of time. however i do not think youll have any issues with warranty.

If your looking for better gas mileage, you should have bought a smaller truck! No air filter is gonna give you that "world of difference" all of us have been looking for so desperately. My way to get better gas mileage was to buy a 4cyl for a commuter car. No airfilter in this world can void manufacturers warranty. If you go into the dealership asking those questions, they are going to play dumb and just say yes so they can get out of the warranty work that doesn't pay much.

Air filters help the engine breathe. I would say throw a K&N in and don't install and aftermarket system as that could void warranty if you suck up water. That has been discussed. Search ****tion will assist in that dept as well.

A true CAI is one of those mods that won't show you much (certainly not enough to justify the cost) in either the mpg or performance area.
It is a mod that really comes to life in concert with other mods that perform better with added airflow, such as headers. Higher end engine work also requires a CAI, header, exhaust restructuring such as a cam, heads, etc.
If you are not planning on at least a total overhaul of the exhaust system (and I don't mean just a muffler or cat-back) then it'll be just as good and a lot cheaper to go with just a better performing drop in filter.
