so im goin to be puttin a dana 60 in the front of my truck the only question i really have is do the gear ratios in the front axle need to be the same as in the rear axle??? you know to turn at the samw spped when 4wd is engaged

lol if you plan to use the 4WD on the road yeah you should change out the gears...now offroad doesent reallly matter but the closer the ratios the better...now if you got like 4:56" in the front and 3.05"s in the rear your gonna have some major probs even offroad...but deff alot better making the ratios the same front and rear...and while ur at it if you got the cash get a locker too

 

yeah mine as well just make the gears the same front/rear while your at it. the sfa isnt just a bolt on swap as is. whats an extra few hours of work.

 

a quick little bit of $$$$$$$$$$ last i looked gears for a dana 60 are about $200-$300 bucks

 

I hope you are not going to try to do the swap yourself, because if you gotta ask if the gear ratios have to be the same or not, you sir, are NOT prepared for this undertaking. But if you do, take a lot of pics, especially of all the custom fabrication work that is needed. I can cut & weld with the best of 'em and if I had something to go by, I'd love to have a solid front axle again...

By the way, if the axle ratios are off by more than about 2%, and you hit 4wd, you'll have to send the flatbed back for the diffs & transfer case off the road after they winch your truck on...

 

well, i would probably try to find a dana 44. cheaper stuff, and the 60 is way overkill for the truck. unless you are going for a 60 in the rear to, and i think most of the 60's had really high ratios, even if you do have the 3.92 in the rear, you are gonna break stuff if you dont have the same ratio, and if you do get a 60, it will be the rear end, so prepare to drive home in 4-hi without a rear drive shaft.

PS, hammer +1 thats a rookie question if you are gonna do this yourself.

i know a guy (this is a strictly mud slingin truck) it was a ford with a 9" out back and a dana 44 up front he had 3:56 gears in back and 3:73 gears up front and it ran fine, it just took some reversing and such to get it back out of 4wd but to this day truck still runs been like that for about a 2 years

 

If your asking about something as simple as this, good luck with the axle swap. Are you planing to go with leafs or coils?
