tranny question on 06 ram
i've got the 5 speed automatic. One of the first things I noticed when I got the truck...and it annoys me is the shifting. When the truck shifts from 1st to 2nd in normal driving. It feels like a manual almost. It climbs rpms...then slightly backs off...then goes into second and pulls harder...and soon after i have to back off the gas or i'll start passing the traffic. I'm probably feeling a lot of torque at that rpm that it shifts at 2500-3K.
It reminds me of a manual transmission. I Start in Second...push in the clutch shift into second gear with a slight delay. I can actually watch the rpms on the tach lower 300-500rpms before it shifts into 2nd. If hammer it at WOT...i don't see the delay
Is this relatively common. I guess i'm use to our little g6...doesn't seem to be much of a delay when it shifts?
I'm going to throw a superchips in soon, but i was just curious if this drives anyone else a little crazy and if the sc will help.

not from 1st to 2nd but from 2nd to 3rd, its very gradual takes about 30 seconds to shift if im driving normal if i hit the gas a lil when its shifting it sticks it right in there...kidna weird but ive gotten used to it
I have the superchips and it makes the shift alot quicker...but what I don't like is how it downshifts when braking. You FEEL the downshift especially if you hit the brakes semi-hard. Pretty annoying.
Try driving in town with the tow/haul on. Do you have a '06+ MDS?
The SC WILL firm up the tranny shifts a bunch. Most love it, many have to get used to it. The firmer downshifts are actually a good thing for the tranny, even though annoying, gets rid of the factory built-in "slip" which over the life of the tranny increases wear & tear...

yes mine does that too, pull then slight pause and then pull again. there is a pause like you said between 1st and 2nd and then again between 2nd and 3rd. it only seems to be under normal acceleration. i kinda like the feel, but when you give big throttle it isnt what you want. superchips is my next mod too.
Thanks all for the replies...can't wait to try to the SC. Speaking of that...i posted this question yesterday, but how are these rams getting second gear scratch? I have a RCSB 4x4 with a 3.92 LSD and i'm going to be really surprised if i get 2nd gear scratch at WOT, but i have seen videos on Youtube and heard people talk about it....do these people not have the anti-spin diff?

It is called "torque management". It backs off of the throttle when it shifts to relieve stress on the transmission. A tuner like the Predator will usually let you turn this off. It will also firm up the shifts as well. You will need a shift kit installed in the tranny to get screeching shifts.
It is to keep warranty claims down with the lifetime powertrain warranty on the 07/08 models.

My truck does the same thing. I took mine in from brand new and they changed the 2nd shift solenoid but after a month it was back. Mine doesn't do it unless I am very easy on the pedal. It feels like it shifts from 2-3, then realizes it can't handle the load, then from 3-2.....over reving, then finally shifts to 3rd. Happens cold or warmed up.
Dealer told me it was normal. They said if something happens out of warranty now they have it on record that I had it in twice now for a concern issue.
