"SeVeReDiStOrTiOn" had it exactly correct.

This is directly from my 06 manual:

"TOW HAUL” mode, 5th gear (if equipped) is disabled
and 2-3 and 3-4 shift patterns are modified. Shifts into
Overdrive (4th gear) are allowed during steady cruise
(for improved fuel economy) and automatic closed throttle
downshifts to 3rd gear are performed (for improved
braking) when driving conditions warrant. Pressing
the “TOW HAUL O/D OFF” button a second time to
select O/D OFF will disable 4th and 5th gear completely,
which should eliminate any excessive transmission shifting."

I know, especially at highway speeds my transmission will hold in 4th for several minutes before shifting into 5th; in standard mode. Keep in mind also that the computer will hold the transmission back while it is cold and it takes a minimum of 5 miles of driving to get the transmission fully warmed up.

I would ensure that the transmission IS fully warmed up, and maybe then some, and then check it out again. If you feel it still doesn't follow the above from the manual, then you may want to get it checked out again. But, Mozzer, you were a bit off on your perception, at least as I read your original post.

Give it a try again and good luck!

O/D off means exactly that. Just knocks out the last gear, not 2, just one.
Can't put it much better than that O/D off just gets ride of 5th not 4th

Default 2008 tow/haul

Thanks a lot for the input, I would like to hear from anyone with an '08 just in case they have changed something for the worse in the programming.

My 07 seems to do as it should with O/D Off and Tow/Haul. You definitely notice a difference in Tow/Haul and if you accidentally leave O/D Off on? while going down the highway, you can hear your engine screaming at you.

And I was wondering about that whole "holding back the tranny" thing. I seem to have a hard problem getting into 5th sometimes, even when getting on the interstate. Its like I have to MAKE it shift. I know yall have a good explanation on this. By the way, I live in Louisiana so its never cold

Yeah I think the OD off is working fine, shifts up 3 usual gears then lock up the TC. But the tow/haul is no different.

So were up to an 07 with all behaving as it should, any 2008s ?

Mine is an '08.
I never had any trouble even when cold shifting into 5th on the highway. Actually it will shift into 5th with ease and sometimes I knock it out because it lags the engine.
Tow/haul just holds 4th gear for super long before shifting into 5th on the highway so you don't keep on downshifting constantly.
Here's Chryslers words.
DUAL-MODE TOW/HAUL FEATURE
The 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 also offers a “Tow/Haul” feature that provides crisp shifts and reduces gear searching, and an “Overdrive Off” mode that delivers maximum trailer towing performance. These systems will also select a lower gear in downhill conditions in order to utilize the engine’s braking capability.

I can drive empty on the highway in Tow/haul and it will hold me back when going down a hill. It helps out alot. I use O/D off when running 55mph on back roads. My truck wants to drop t in 5th gear??? 55 is too slow for 5th to me on hilly conditions.
