Default What's a guy gotta do?

What do you have to do to get some better fuel mileage on these trucks? I never did expect it to be great, but I'm getting 9.6 mpg today. A week ago I had a complete tuneup done on my truck. All of my fluids were replaced and my hoses were replaced, along with some belts. All new spark plugs and wires. My oil is still good in the truck, hasn't even gone 3000 miles. My K&N was cleaned not that long ago. I don't drive my truck hard, hardly ever gets over 2500 rpm driving. I run 89 octane in it all of the time. My tires are still at the stock size.
What can be done for better fuel mileage? This is starting to get ridiculous in my truck. I could've afforded the other truck that I was wanting to get within a year probably just with the money saved on fuel. I'd like to replace my gears, but that'll cost me over $1000 to do, and I'd like to get a chip, but if my mileage doesn't increase any, it'll do me no good paying 10-20 cents more per gallon of fuel for only 1-2 mpgs.
What does everyone else get? I know right now is the winter, but it should be better than this. So whenever my family sees that mpg, they automatically think that it is because of how I drive, but it's not.

if your looking at the overhead did you reset it recently? have you use fuel injector cleaner.

ill spare you since someone is going to eventually say it, you drive a V8 hemi, what do you expect, really. its no prius, shouldnt have gotten it if you wanted high mpgs. and right now who cares, i just filled up from a quarter tank and it cost me $38. overhead says i got 300 miles DTE.

Just reset the overhead, did fuel injector cleaner less than 1000 miles ago. I know that it's a Hemi, but my grandpa's '05 gets 15 mpg, so there is no reason why my truck can't be doing a little it better. Especially for how easy that I drive it.

My truck appears to be a monotone 2003 version of yours.
I have a K&N CAI, Flowmaster 70 series big block, and that's really it. I'm trying to think what I have, but that's basically it. My grandpa's '05 is also bone stock.

Going to a smaller/lighter wheel will help...you could sell those 20's and probably break even for some 17's. Getting a straight-through muffler will help some too.

How many miles are on it? Are you only using the computer to check the mileage?

Fill the tank and set the trip OD. Then when you go to fill it again divide the mileage on the OD by the gallons put into the truck. It is more accurate then the computer is.

I would, but I just put too much money in on brand new tires to break even on a set of 17s. I'd love to, but it just would cost me too much money.

I do the math also every now and then, and it always comes to be really close with the overhead.

First of all, don't believe the overhead, I've seen 'em off as much as 3 mpg in both directions. Hand calculate it.

But yeah, you should be doing better. I'm weighing in at over 7000 lbs. with lift, mods, and turning heavy 35" tires and average about 12.3 in combination driving. Last trip with it to Ga., 85% interstate at about 74 mph, I got 15.8, with a 700 lb. ATV in the bed on the way up, 16.1 without it coming back.

Other than tune up, make sure the TB is clean, as well as the EGR. Those two things are bad mpg robbers if they are dirty and not opening/closing properly.

Gears are a fantastic mod, and IMO not an option, if you run bigger tires, but for stock tires, it's a performance thing. Tuners will net you a 1-2 mpg increase, but will never pay for themselves if purchased only from a mpg standpoint.

The only mod I can safely say will pay for itself without waiting years and thousands of miles for the payback would be an e-fan. You can see a solid 2-3 mpg increase from day one and considering even a top of the line model, like the Flex-A-Light is well under $300, won't take years to see the pay off...
