You're not going to tame the 268 with a canned tune. It will run, but not up to it's full potential. The 260 is a better street cam, whereas the 268 will really shine at the strip. The retainers come off when you change the springs anyway, so there's no extra work involved with replacing them.

and yes the truck has had the "hemi tick" all its life, i dont blame it on that, the truck has been driven VERY hard and worked very hard, but maintained well so i dont blame the valves for breaking haha

Sure it is...sorta. The hemi tick is a valve clearence issue. Do we agree? That would mean at some point somethings going to break under those valve covers. Whether that's at 30k or 230k, it's a roll of the dice.
But it's never a happy ending.

It's a 2005 for Pete's sake! If it's been maintained like you claim. There's absolutely no reason for valve failures this early in the trucks life. Unless your not telling us the whole story.

I've seen 2nd gen Rams with the 5.2 and 5.9's with 250+k on them, used as farm and contruction trucks, the body falling off around the motor, and they don't knock and rattle around like the Hemi does.

What is the first thing you do when you get into a vehicle that has a Hemi in it? Most likely you are thinkin "lets see what this can do" Hemis get ran hard, harder than most engines just because of its name. Be it a Ram,Magnum,Charger or Jeep Cherokee. Plus I dont care what year a truck is if you use the truck for what it is made for hauling, towing and just plain working it may not last as long as a truck that never see a dirt road. I see farm trucks and drilling rig trucks that have had exemplary maintenance performed on them and they only last a few years. The age of a truck is not the issue. As for the Hemi tick. I was at the drag strip last fall and seen a Ram with a Hemi running 9 second 1/4 mile and guess what? She was a tickin. Its not that big of a gamble as you are leading us to believe...

I agree. The HEMI tick is nothing but excessive valve stem to rocker clearance, the only damage the HEMI tick will do is mushroon the top of the valve stem slightly after a couple hundred thousand miles or so. And thats if it idles for a week at a time, as soon as the oil press comes up the clearance is eliminated and the ticking stops

Nathan, stay away, far away. from the 268! Thats the cam I am running and it is awesome,,, in a swb 2 door truck with a cam, converter and gears with a sct tune and a psc1. It took a long time to get it tuned correctly, dont waste your time and money with a 4 door truck and extra change in your pocket. It is an awesome cam for what I do, but would be a poor choice for you.

Look at the KRC 206,210 OR 212 CAMS, these folks are good with the HEMI

as well with the cam i have the titanium comp cam retainers coming. And my dealer has ordered me the 6.1L hemi exhaust valve springs, and 6.1L one piece pushrods, so i should have no problems with that valvetrain anymore!! i hope anyways
