Default K&N Air Filter

How much good will a drop in K&N air filter do me on my 03 Ram 4.7? I will eventually have a cold-air intake and so forth but for now just how much good will the air filter by its-self bring?

I don't know. I put one in my 03' 4.7 last week. There is a banner ad on this site that claims an 8.6 hp gain. I hope so.

You probably won't notice it. A little more noise might escape, but honest gains probably won't be felt.

You're right. 9 HP is less than 5% of your total HP, but every little bit helps.

I've have one in my 4.7 (for about 1 year). I noticed no gain and fuel mileage stayed the same. I'm in the process of building my own cold air with a conical k&n. The conical and round open filters flow more air than the stock flat.

Maybe it psychological but I can feel the change in my new 05 5.7L. More pickup and throttle response.

Maybe I need a placebo!!

I agree with Cve - I know I felt a difference, but it helped to use a hole saw to cut 5 holes in the sides and bottom of the stock airbox! The filter is huge - let it breathe, not suck air through a straw!!! You should definitely feel and hear it!!

I'd be willing to bet it's psychological - the increased noise makes you think it's doing more, plus you spent $40+ on a filter...

I'm not ******* the product, I've got on in my jetta turbo, my ram, and my built 5.0 (and had them in the past for my 98 impreza, 01 impreza [well a prm but similar product], 99 grand cherokee 4.7, etc). I believe they work, and every little pony helps, I just don't think that your *** is sensitive enough to feel a 2-5% increase in power.
