If you plan on towing anything or lifting the truck and putting bigger tires....go hemi or desl. i love my truck (has 4.7) but now that i have the lift and occasionally tow a trailer, I have issues trying to beat the lack of HP and TQ of the 4.7. it seems that the mods that i have done to the truck is about all the engine can proplerly handle. now im looking for gears, programers ect...over all the engine is good, I have 75k and havent had any issues at all. replaced the battery and sparkplugs but thats it.

As far as reliability, the 4-7 is a great motor. You can put a ton of miles on them, and not have to worry with the proper maintenance. However, the advances in technology have made the bigger V8's just as reliable, and just as fuel efficient. If you just going to use the truck for cruising, and not worry about throwing mods at it, the 4-7 is a great motor. But with the prices the way they are now, you can get a HEMI 4x4 for a nice price tag.

The only difference in reliability and fuel mileage between the two, is nothing. Pay a little less for the 4-7, thats about it.

My 4.7 runs great, and gives me enough power to haul stuff when I need to.

Dont get me wrong, Ive towed 8000 lbs before with a proper hitch setup and a brake controller, no problem. But it would be nice to have a HEMI. according to dodge, your towing capacity will increase a thousand pounds if you regear to 4.56's

If you're looking to buy used try to find an '08, better power, better gas mileage with the tweaks made for the '08. I would not trade my 4.7 with the 6 speed manual for any hemi, but thats just me.

Having both motors, I personally prefer the Hemi. If I didnt have the 5-7, the 4-7 would probably be sufice. But my gas mileage is roughly in par with the Durango's, and the D sounds much better than my ram, and of course gets up a lot better.

Basically, its like the others said. If at all possible, get the hemi. If the 4-7 has to be the way, the '08+ is the one you want...

I have had my 4.7 dodge ram QC/SB for 7 months now. Gas mileage through the winter was around 13, now it's around 14.5-15. This is pretty much mixed driving. I towed a 4,000 lb trailer in February and got 13mpg. It really changes with the wind though. I can get 12 going one way and 9 going back. Sucks!! As far as dependability I'm quite impressed. There's 155k on my truck and it's still going, althought it is leaking out of the rear main seal. But no reason this motor won't go another 100k.

The 2008 4.7 is a capable engine, having received a huge HP boost from the previous years model (310 vs 235) the biggest measure with trucks - especially 4 wheel drives is torque and the torque did increase (330 vs 300) which puts it just 35 horse and 45 foot/pounds behind the hemi. That said, I'm wondering if the engine was redesigned to withstand the extra power, and does that reduce the "headroom" for further mods.
