I have the torsion bar style, which not only lowers the tailgate, but makes it a one finger excersise to raise it.
This makes it very useful for my wife and the kids.
Plus, no moving parts to wear out.
Sorry, but I can't remember for the life of me who makes it or what it's called???
I'll try and post up later what it is.

LMC TRUCK CATALOG has this unit..less money than most of those ez down ones..and as you said it assists up and down...

I still would like to know if the torsion bar type would prevent it from slamming down if you just unlatched it with one hand and let it drop? If Anyone with one could chime in that would be great! thanks. Just not sure if I want to buy both products and if not which one would be better. Thanks

Good question. Was this answered?

My thoughts exactly.
This would be a good feature but buying 2 products to make it work properly seems like more of a hassle than anything.

Sorry for the late reply guys.
Shifts are a killer.
Firstly, the torsion bar makes light work in both the up and down directions.
It makes the tailgate seem to weigh about 5lb in either direction.
However If you drop the tailgate, it will come down with a bang, but nowhere near like if you dropped it before the install.
The only thing about the torsion is, it's a little tricky to install it. You WILL need two people to do it. Don't attempt to do it on your own.
Also, if you need to take the tailgate off, you have to reverse the installation proceedure, which again you will need two people to do.
I've had this mod for well over 2 years on my truck and it has performed faultlessly.
I wonder how long one of those hydraulic rams with all that tailgate weight on it, will last?
The torsion is cheaper, simpler and aids in both the up and down directions.
Hope this helps?
Al.

I've got the EZ Down. One of the first things I bought when I got the truck a few months ago. The wife doesnt kill herself letting the thing down if she takes it to the grocery store. The tailgate is pretty heavy and since the rear is raised, its at a peculiar height. It was a breeze to install and I think it was worth the $50 myself.

Thumbs up

Installed the torsion bar type today and it works great. Had it sitting around for 3 months and saw this thread and got off my lazy A$$ and installed it. Yes need at least 2 people to install but it works great and yes it will slam down if let go but nothing like before. I would give it two thumbs up but you have to drill 2 holes in truck and a good place for rust to start. Still a great mod.

thanks guys that pretty much answers the questions! I am going to start with the EZ down because I want to be able to drop it hands free, then maybe later add the torsion! Thanks

My EZ down is on the fedex truck this morning out for delivery, with any luck I'll get it installed today and let you know the results!

OK, installed it at lunch today. Took only about 20mins to install. It mounts to the driver side replacing a bolt that holds the cable and then an extra one using an existing hole. The Ez down will let the tailgate down at a controlled decent without me holding onto it. Overall one of those "top mods" at a low cost I've done.

Oh, and all of the tools and such are even included in the bag for install
