first thoughts
easy things first-
coolant level, no leaks?
nothing blocking air flow?
fans operating?
no check eng light? free code ck at some parts stores ie auto zone-
vehicle is stock?

then if nothing applies:
I would then replace thermostat- recomend a OEM correct temp!

Does it do this on the highway or in city traffic? If it does this on the highway, the t-stat is intermittently sticking closed. I had the same problem on my '03. If it does this in traffice, it could also be an intermittent fan clutch. Maybe time for an e-fan.

Drain the old coolant (its time anyway), run radiator flush through it to clean up system, rinse out thoughly, replace the stat, refill with pre-mixed coolant. Make sure you have the heater on too while running flush through cooling system, and while rinsing out flush agent.

Yep, I'd burp the system first, then look at the thermostat...

check the radiator cap as well, if its not holding proper pressure it will cause it to overheat under load. A flush is recommended as well.

def an air bubble in there.

Also, I used Roayal Purple's "Purple Ice" coolant additive and it works awesome. i first used it on my Mustang and noticed much cooler temps. Consistent temps. Dropped 15-20* hot. It runs $15 per bottle and all you need is one. Dropped theneedle on my truck guage about 1/8th way towards cold.

I think HAMMER has a DIY in the FAQ section on burping the system. And like previously said, check that radiator cap or just replace it, cheap insurance.

When burping the system, do you wait untill the temp guage reaches 1/2 way mark untill you turn it off or should it burp before then? I tried the parking on the hill and turning the heater on full but it didnt work. Also, can you buy that royal purple at autozone or advanced auto?
