hemi vs. lightning
i understand your point about beatin it...
now we just need to wait for horatio's 1/4 time of his "GT roadster"....im guessing it will magically run 9.80s...it seems that every mustang on the internet runs 10s at the worst...lol

Haven't made it to the track yet. I need to do some serious tuning on the EFI before it's running right since it's running way rich. Based upon the partial dyno run it's putting out about 350hp/330lb-ft as it sits right now. I say partial because it was a fresh rebuild with less than 1000 miles on it so we just ran it up to about 5000, and the cam I choose peaks out at about 6000. I also need to put a roll cage in it before I feel safe taking it to the track, and I'm guessing I'd get 1 run in before they chased me off for not having one. Will it do 10's? No. I'm guessing that in N/A trim it'll do solid 12s, and since it's a low compression on forged guts I'm going to supercharge it when I get the 2-4 grand to waste. Target output was a very reliable ~500hp. With a current curb weight of 3000 lbs, it's fairly quick.
And as far as dragging your truck around, do you have 4 driven tires? Do you have a low range? Nope. I do. You've got 2 low profile contact patches trying to keep you from moving whereas I can air down my tires and get a fairly substancial grip on the ground.

Yeh, I have a HEMI and I get 19+ on the highway, 14 in-town, I have no ticking or knocking sounds, 22,000 miles and nothing has broken, in fact not even one single problem at all. And to top it off I am sittin fat on 20's with tunes and air-conditioning, of which neither your Dodge or your ford have, in fact your ford doesnt even have a roof much less windows, real impressive.
And personally I could care less if you have a car that is faster han my truck, my truck is just that, A TRUCK! I have a car thats faster than my truck, my 1970 Cougar with a 351C, but I dont go throwing it in other dodge owners faces because I have respect for all of us that love our dodge products. I have continued to own at least 1 chrysler vehicle since 1995 and proud to say so.
Judging by the structure and content of your posts and replies to me and the others in this particular thread, I am confident to say that if you want to continue this "battle" of wits and verse, then you will never prevail.

your pickup stock didnt even get highway mileage that is as good as a HEMI, and now you have a 4 barrel on it so I would imagine it isnt any better now. I have the feeling I am getting better mileage than you do...
Also the W series trucks came mostly with 318's. The '86 truck 318(only 5 more HP than my Fifth Avenue's 318) that year barely spit out 145 HP stock, and even with a cam, intake, carb and headers I dont think it would get up to 345 hp with 375 torque. Also they only came with either a 3 or a 4 speed tranny... the 360's put out around 185 HP and 275 torque, and with the same improvements mentioned above it MIGHT have more of a chance getting close to the same figures as the HEMI but not quite.
A tires contact patch itself and the actual amount of tread touching the ground is all that matters when dealing with traction. So even though you think that the profile or aspect ratio of the 20 tire is too small, your wrong, for in relation to any 60 series 17" tire of the same width its about the same. Now I agree that the combo of the 20" wheel/tire is pretty damn heavy(I have rotated mine and they practically give me a hernia each time), but that is why dodge put the 3.92 gears in as a requirement when the 20's come stock. But in favor of the 20's, and heavier tire will also help with traction, especially since the HEMI has no problem turning them.
Lets talk about your 4wd, can you burn all 4 tires a the same time? Maybe you can and also maybe you cant help it. You dont have any contol over the amount of torque your engine puts out other than your foot, but I do, its built into the tranny computer, of course it is the main thing of frustration to us HEMI owners(along with the unmodifiable engine controller). But in this case its not a hinderance, but a major help. I can floor it and the tranny will recognize the pulling load and apply the required torque and control wheelspin, therefore enhancing pulling capacity to 9200 lbs, almost twice what your truck weighs. All the while my foot stays glued to the floor, while you will have to continuously modulate the gas manually with your foot. Its easier to pull a vehicle when the tires are spinning because they arent making traction.
My handling is awesome, the ride totally rocks, the braking with 4 wheel discs is better than your going to get in your truck, my a/c puts out 38 degrees in 100+ temps making little if any difference in my mileage or performance(since it momentarily kicks off when you floor it), I dont have to smell mine or anyone elses exhaust, my hair doesnt get mussied up, my girlfriends hair and makeup dont get messed up(far more important), and most importantly when it does decide to break or give me trouble, I just roll into the dealer with my 7 year/100,000 miles and they will be repairing it for no cost to me.
Also yeh you did bring up your mustang, not me, not anyone, you threw it out there all by yourself, I had nothing to do with that. You did the disrespecting of dodge and its HEMI with you original "spank" comment.
And once again you guessed wrong, I knew you had a dodge, I know w series trucks, I used to work for/at a local dodge dealer, duh...
In my 21 years of driving(much older than 21 years old), I would make a bet that I have driven more makes, models and types of vehicles than you can shake a stick at. Everything from a alfa romeo to a yugo, and almost every type of exotic(ferrari, porsche, lambo, nsx, you name it) that rolls the streets of the USA. I definitely have driven more Dodge Vipers than you can even dream that you could drive and I've gotten paid to do so. And I am not just talking around the block, I am talking cross country. My friends owned one of the best Chrysler/Plymouth and Dodge dealerships in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and I had access to any of the cars on the lot for whenever or wherever I needed to go.
My dad used to race cars when I was just a little one and he had me working in his shop way back when. I have been in the automotive business my entire life. Most of the time I know what I am talking about and if I dont, I will find out before I say anything. I am willing to admit when I am wrong, but in this case I still say you aren't going to be pulling my "little" HEMI around with your slightly modified W250, more likely if anything, a dead heat with nothing more than a loss of rubber and a waste of gas, kinda like this whole confrontation is.

I have to run off to work but I wanted to toss out a couple of things.
Todd - yeah, your Cat would break my truck.
vfs - I didn't toss out a comment about my mustang, rIntro brought it up. Not me, him.
My truck has a 360 4bbl from the factory, along with no cats. With the upgrades I've done it put 180 and 255 or so to the ground, through a failing torque converter and 35x12.5x16.5 all terrains on steel 16.5x9.75 wagon wheels. That's a hell of a lot of drivetrain loss due to the dead TC which has been replaced since then, and the near 100lb per corner wheel/tire combo. You've got me beat on horsepower, no doubt in my mind that your truck is faster. Torque on the other hand is relatively close, and when you factor in my ~30:1 crawl ratio to your ~12:1 or whatever it is I've got a major advantage in pulling. Can I burn off all 4? Nope. Not hardly. It takes a lot more than sub-400 lb-ft power levels to get that drivetrain spinning in disregard to groundspeed.
In regards to the fuel economy - I get 12 on the freeway, 10 in town if I'm not spanking it all over the place. How many threads are there that have "poor fuel economy" in the subject line in this forum? I've read several people complaining about under 10mpg and I don't read that many threads on the subject because it bores me. I wasn't talking about your truck in particular, but there are more people complaining about lousy fuel economy than there are praising it.
Contact patch - the aspect ratio DOES have something to do with it. Stiffer sidewalls being the major component. One of the 4-wheeler rags did a comparison between 20's and 17's iirc just a month or three ago. Interesting read. To increase contact patch, you air down the tire. Your stiff sidewalls won't allow much deformation of the tire, certainly less than a smaller wheel would. I can air down my tire to about 17psi without risking popping the bead, and have quite a significant increase in rubber on the road. You can't. Couple that with the fact that I've got 4 driven tires to your 2, plus my crawl ratio versus yours, plus the fact that my hitch is a lot higher off the ground than yours, and if we were to chain them together you'd be adding weight to the back of my truck whereas I'd be lifting yours upwards, and that's why I say I wouldn't have any problem dragging your truck around. Torque management won't help all that much. I've got an auto and big sticky tires - it manages my torque quite well.
That's exactly why I've got the Jetta. Chipped it's putting out about 210hp and 240 lb-ft, air, heated leather seats, sunroof, decent stereo, blah blah blah, warranty, etc. But I've got my truck for hauling stuff and screwing around, and the mustang is a donor for a future undecided vehicle - either a cobra kit or a miata. Now I've gotta jet or I'll be late for work.

hey whats up...New to the board.. I got an 05 Ram 1500 4dr wit the hemi...I love the truck alot and its pretty quick for what it is...I traded in my 02 Ford Lightning for this truck due to work reasons. Im not tryin to take sides here at all cause I love my RAM, but stock shortbed Ram will not keep up wit any of the s/c Lightnings.
My 02 stock wit a fiberglass bed cover, steel cowl hood, and a bed liner and a bunch of other crap wieghed in @ 4980lbs wit me in it and i went 13.4s @ 100-101mph all day long.
I spent about 2k on it and i went wit full weight 12.30s on just blower and with a lil 50 shot of juice 11.70s.
The truck was alot of fun. I raced an SRT-10 when I had it and I beat it really badly like 5x in a row w/o nitrous.
I just got my truck but I'm thinkin about doing a custom single turbo on it. Just for fun.
Well good luck if u race that Lightning.
