87 octane is not good for the hemi, yes, it will run and over time, you will not notice the loss of performance or crappy mileage until its time to replace injectors and you have a carbed up engine.

89 octane will save you money and you have the mileage and performance from the get go.

I run 92 to 94 octane every odd tank, or if I'm driving on the higway, I Find my performance and milage is better when towing and the truck is pulling a 100 to 250 RPM less at 60 mph when I tow vers mid grade.

Thiers allway going to be the few who say high octane is allways better, and the majority or going to say your wasting your money running higher octane.

I'm of the opion running the highest octane ( for gas ) when your working the engine is going to clean it out that much quicker, and the higher the octane, the lower your engine operating temp.

I never waste my money on flue injector cleaning, High octane flue and a good high way drive increase engine life.

But adding rocket flue to your hemi, is not going to give you a rocket.

Detergents in your fuel is what has a cleaning effect...not octane. 87 will not gunk up your injectors or valves any faster...going to a cheap gas station that doesn't use detergents does that.

Higher octane won't lower engine temp.

You won't "waste" your money on injector/fuel system cleaner but you'll waste it on high octane on a stock engine? Hmm..

Just buy the 91 every 3rd tank or put $10 or $15 in a tank and the mix will bring up the octane from 87.

Too high of octane will also hurt performance. Higher octane fuel is harder to ignite to prevent detonation in high compression engines and in high timing situations. Running a higher octane than the recommended rating will not aid in anything on a stock engine with a stock tune.
The damage comes from too low of an octane rating and detonation burns pistons.
I run 93 in the Ram with a 93 octane tune on my DSP. I also run 93 octane in the Mustang because I run the timing high.
I used to race my Mustang weekly. I ran it a few times on unleaded racing fuel (102 octane) the car slowed down because it is only 9.0:1 compression and could not ignite the fuel fast enough to get a proper burn.
You can run 91-93 octane in a stock truck, but you gain NOTHING. All 3 grades of fuel have the same amount of detergents in them (name brand) so running every 3rd tank 91 or 93 does absolutely nothing but cost more money.

Just run 89 octane and your Hemi will be happy. Or get a DSP and run 93 octane with a 93 octane tune and enjoy the 20 extra rear wheel HP!!!

i dont know about the prices where you guys are but here in OK the price goes up in .10 increments. i.e-- 87 $2.37, 89 $2.47, and 91 $2.57. now as far as i know the trucks have a 26 gallon tank so the difference between 87 and 91 would only be 5.20 a tank and i dont think i have ever put 26 gal in any of my truck. most i ever got was around 24. i always run a higher octane on road trips dont know if it helps but going from 89 to 91 only cost 2.60 more per a full tank.
