I took my truck into the shop today to see what has been going on with it? Lately the blower would not come on and a couple of time the guage cluster went totally dead. Along with some error codes. My mechanic just called me and said that the wire harness in the steering column area was totally burnt. And that it will need to be replaced along with the ignition switch most likely. HOw bad is this i mean money wise? he was going to fix that first cause he said that might have tripped the code that where on the computer.

ok the problem is the wire connector coming off of the ignition switch. So what i need is an ignition switch and the connector that goes into it. If i can get that connector i can just replace it. Also what would cause the wires to burn up? this is the second time this has happened in 3 years. I was thinking that the blower motor is not right and drawing to many amps thus overloading the wire and burning it.
Any one know where i can get the switch and the connector?

Ask for a 2nd opinion from another shop first if possible. Wires can be repaired (I am an Electrician I know) but if those wire are buried deep in the Dash and you ain't fixin it yourself the labor could be pretty high.

That kind of Damage comes from a loose or corroded connection,usually loose. You should try to find one at a scrapyard and fix it yourself,I have access to tools that put new ends on wires for plugs like that but it would be better if you could just get a new plug and splice it in.

 

Yea i can fix it i am also an electrition/HVACR tech. Just wanted to know if there was some where that i could buy the plug new. Also i need the switch where can i get that?

 

Just thought of it that ignition switch was pretty burnt I am think that there is a fualty connection in there causing it to burn.

 

Finding a new plug will not be easy. You would probably have to buy the whole harness to get it. As mentioned, I would find a donor truck at the local salvage yard and splice the wiring together back where it is not damaged. Just cut out as much wiring as possible from the donor. I would replace the switch with a new one to be safe.
