WOW, Who knew that mesh thing actually works! I always thought those were BS! I saw the original episode they did but not this follow up,thanks for posting the vid truckin151.
i put an extang cover on my ram.. the kind its like a tarp that clips into the sides and it has 3 support rails, cab, bed, and center of the bed.. i noticed a .5 to 1 mpg increase.. depends on how i drive of course.
i had a fiberglass cover on my 1999 gmc with the 5.3L never really noticed any mpg diff after i took it off but i sure as hell noticed a diff with wind drag at 100mph....could cruise at 100mph with that truck let off the gas and she would stay cruising forever after i took it off......lost it on the street!! it never did slide through the air like that ever again at 100mph.
It seems like a hard cover would save just enough drag to make up for it's weight, kind of a wash as far as mpg's. More attention should be paid to if a cover will fit your needs or not,I don't think the MPG difference will affect your bottom line very much.
I have a TruXedo cover on mine. Added a locking tailgate handle from Moe's the other day.
Keeps the bed nice and dry. Very little gain in economy.
Velcro on the sides and has a dual latching mechanism over the tailgate area. Rolls up by the back window for full bed access if needed.
Painless, just remove the 8 screws holding on the access panel in the tailgate and it is held on with 2 10mm nuts. Took less than 10 minuted to changes. Looks oem too. Key goes in under the handle out of sight.
