i'll try to make this short. friday lost colant and severely oveheated, not sure how long i drove around with it super hot i just looked down it it was pegged out. stopped at the closest autozone, filled er up with coolant and away i went. everything was fine for i'd say a good 60 miles, late that afternoon i noticed a bumping feel, kinda felt like a ctlinder wasn't hittin right. finally got a check engine light as i was coming up on an autozone so i get em check it out real quick. of course, lost compression on cyl 2. so i get some spark plugs hopin that'll be the ticket, changed em first thing saturday morning oil on #2 plug. i've heard everything from head gasket to cracked block cracked head, warped head, piston rins, all of the above. its at the shop now gettin a leak down test to determine what it is. everywhere i've talked to is tellin me to get a new engine put in, and if they work on it they'll have to pull the whole thing out anyway. (5 out of 5 places told me this). any suggestions or similar experiences?

ps. this may be a ridiculous question i've never looked into it BUT, is it feasable to drop a HEMI in since htey do'nt seem to have hardly any problems like the 4.7?

 

4.7 are bad for this your mechanics are right on in the diagnosis IMO
and ya a new engin would be your best bet . and i dunno on the hemi swap i just buy hemi's so i dont have to worry about these things.

and i must ask your milleige?? is prob around 65-75k???

 

yeah, i know i should ahve got a Hemi i wanted one but i was 16 when i got it and payin for it myself and insurance was too high, so i got this one. Its at 92k as of last week and its an 03.

Ummmm...my 4.7 is still factory with 165,000 on the clock. The 4.7's are notoriously more reliable than hemis if properly maintained. If the OP had gotten the problem fixed right away it would have probably not turned into this issue. The Hemi swap shouldn't be too hard though. Just need motor mounts, the engine, the ECM/PCM, and the engine wiring harness.

 

You know, and I'm not directing this at the OP, but I think it's got to be a maintenance thing with the 4.7. You see a LOT of posts with guys (and gals) having major engine issues with them with relatively low miles (80k and up), and you see posts from guys with upwards of 200,000 miles on that engine with nary a problem.
Personally, I know two Grand Cherokee owners with over 220k miles on their 4.7 V8. Is it that this engine just needs the oil and coolant changed at or inside the recommended intervals? Another thing I've noticed is that these people with major failures of their 4.7 almost NEVER are the original owner, so could it indeed be simply maintenance? I don't know, but it'd be interesting to find out...

 

Completely agree! It could happen to any engine that has severely overheated.

 

It's not a maintenance thing. My truck is meticulously maintained and I ended up with a crack in my block. Thankfully I still had about 2000 miles left on warranty. My truck never overheated, but I was driving along and it all of a sudden was running rough as hell and throwing a bunch of misfire codes. According to the dealer, it had thrown two rods and the block was cracked. They replaced the block, and aside from a bunch of other issues they caused when they did the work, the truck is running good. And yeah, it was at about 70K miles.

 

Sorry to hear it. I have 90,000 on mine at is still running strong as ever. The only modification to the engine itself is my change to 206 cams. I run synthetic fluids in everything and so far it has really payed off. I hope it works out for you.

 

^^^so your saying you got a new block and misc items from the dealer at 70K???and at 90K she overheats and prolly warped a head? did they give you any kind of warranty with the half *** rebuild? but yeah ive seen the hemi swap thing b4 like said above motor mounts ecu/pcm wiring harness and ALOT of time...
