I have a 2006 Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi. I have been letting the dealership do the oil changes on it up until now. They raised the price to $46.00 for an oil change. I am going to do it myself from now on. The dealership is almost 30 miles away. There is an advanced auto down the road from my house. Does it make a difference which oil filter I use when I change the oil??? I have an extended warranty on the truck, If I don't use a factory oil filter, would it void the warranty if anything happened??? Thanx

 

No, you can use any oil filter you want.
With that said, $46 for a basic oil change or does that include 7qts?
Either way it's too much.
The local Advance Auto right down the road from me always has specials on oil changes. 5qts of Mobil 1 and a Purolator Pure One filter for only $24.99
I usually buy a couple of oil changes for each vehicle when those sales come around because even the 2 extra qts for the Hemi are at a reduced price of $2.10 per/qt.

They currently have a Pennzoil special 5qts and a filter for $12.99

Don't use anything Fram. I'd go with Purolator Pure Personally because it is the best filter they carry. Yes, even better than the overpriced K&N filters. The Pur One has the best Micronic Filtration and is priced competatively. Fram just sucks, i know there's some that would argue otherwise, but this is my opinion and I'm gonna stick to it...lol

You'll find oil filter test comparisons on Google. They are tested and also cut open so you can see what is the design inside. The Purolator Pure one gets the nod as being of the best consistently. They are fairly priced too. Wix also makes an excellent oil filter, a bit more money usually but an excellent filter. Avoid Fram and Pennzoil. You'll see why if you do the Google.

Don't you go to Dodge.com and on the "for owners" section there is almost always a printable coupon. It's under service, seasonal specials. Wow! $46+ $33 ($.55/mile)= $79 for an oil change, not counting the time (min. two hours?). Oil filter brand isn't critical. The main thing is regular changes. Take the truck to a quick-change place (NOT Jiffy Lube) or a trusted wrench-puller nearer home.

If you DIY and a problem crops up, you don't have a leg to stand on. Better to have receipts showing the changes were done by a third party.

I took my Chrysler to a quick-change place I've been doing business with for twenty years. Never had an oil-related issue (or any other, for that matter). Now that it's out of warranty, I DIY. WAY faster, and less expensive.

My Mazda goes to the same place (my oil and filter). There's a record of the work and the interval used (4K miles). Once that warranty has expired (four years or so), I'll do that one myself as well.
