kind of an oddball question...towing...
I have to pick up a 6300lb skidsteer this evening for a job that my father and I will be doing tomorrow. We are using it to haul the tree that we cut up out of this 1/4mi long "trail" if you will. For $210 a day, you cannot beat the price. Beats picking up the logs and putting them into a tiny ATV cart. (trail is not accesible for a truck)
When we pick the machine up, does anyone know a site or what the laws are regarding proper securement of heavier objects? The trailer is a 10ft dump so the bucket is gonna have to sit over the top of the barn doors and not rest directly on the floor. It's an 80" wide inside trailer so it's plenty wide enough.
2 questions. is the bucket in the air instead of on the floor legalor rather a "saftey" issue? The bucket will stick out over the barn doors about 10". I should have bought the 12ft dump...dohh..
The other question. I opted for the D-rings on the floor which are in all 4 corners. it's a 10,000GVWR trailer and weighs 2400lbs. The skidtseer weighs 6300lbs which puts the weight at max. What are the laws regarding straps/chains for securement? I have 4 HD 3" wide ratchet straps that are rated for 2,000lbs(working load) each. Will i get a ticket for not using chains instead? i rarley would ever need to rent this type of equiptment and would hate to spend $120 for chain straps. if anyone has a link to a sit for laws or just knows. please help. Thanks guys.
We will be towing through 3 townships and roughly 20miles to get to out destination AND there are no business decals on any of our trailers for obvious reasons

for the wise guys....I'm not worried about DOT(Dept of Transportion) giving a hard time about too much weight for the truck. Most cops know the securement laws and really only enforce those. They don't get all technical about overweight issue's unless your squatting on the ground or had an acccident. i won't be driving on any highways.
I don't know about NY laws in particular, but I know here in MI I've used ratchet straps in the past with no issues. I've hauled a small tractor on a double axle trailer with my old Ram and just used ratchet straps with no issues. I'm assuming you are going to pulling this behind your Ram? Make sure the trailer has brakes if you can. When I pulled the small tractor (probably 6K lbs including trailer), the rental trailer didn't have brakes, and it took alot of the truck brakes to get it stopped. Luckily I only pulled it a low speeds through the city for about 5 miles.
That will be a good load for your truck, and sounds like a lot of fun. Make sure to use the Tow/Haul mode to keep it out of OD and the trans should be happy.

I've pulled tractors too, but most of them that would go on a 12-14ft trailer are only 3500-4500lbs weighted and calcium in the tires. Skidsteers are Much heavier!
NY law requires brakes on any trailer that weighs over 999lbs. i wouldn't think of towing without them. I think your even suppose to have brakes on every axle as well???? All my trailers have brakes on both axles anyways.
I just didn't know if a cop seen the nylon, they would automatically write a ticket regardless of weight capacity on the ratchet straps?
I'm thinking I should just buy 2 chain straps and put them on the back where you can actually see. Then use the ratchets up front.
I have to be honest...I would rather the machine broke the straps and fell out of the trailer than stayed hooked and rolled the truck over with the trailer...as bad as that sounds...lol
Lots of top weight for a 1500. I'm scared...lol...j/k

i think you can use rachet straps, as long as they are clearly labeled as to how much weight they are rated for. you said you have 4 2000lb rachet straps, so if you had one on each corner that totals 8000lbs... the skid steer is 6300lbs so i dont see why it would be a problem.
also, if the skid steer is a turbo, and the exhaust is facing into the wind, plug it with a rag or something so the turbo doesnt spin with no oil
how high are the sides on the dump trailer? i would think your load might be a little top heavy if the bucket is way up in the air
good luck

Thanks for the turbo info Cheapbeater.
i did find the Laws HERE
Dump trailer has 4" drop axles and the bed sits between the tires, so the deck height is only 24". Here is what I've got. It's the 1st one on the list 9990gvwr
We'eve got 2' high sides on it as well, but i would imagine it's gonna be a PIA to even get back there with the machine in the way so the sides will prolly come off and then the turbo would need to be plugged since we are going to be backing it on the trailer so the bucket can hag out the back. i feel like a hillbilly by the way I'm describing this set-up..lmao But i suppose it won't look any sillier(if that's a word) than the tractor loaded in the Downeaster pic.(check the link of my trailer)
i think i will back the machine until it touches the back wall. Run a chain through the fram to each side and pull the machine forward a couple of inches to tighten up the chain. Then strap the fron with the ratchets. That seems like the most logical thing to do.

Most rental places will provide chains for you. Otherwise you should be fine with the rachet straps. You can also try tilting the bucket down this may give you enough room to squeeze it in the trailer. MAKE SURE YOU BACK IT IN!!! Too much weight behind the axles is a disaster waiting to happen. Ive flipped a dump trailer doing 65 on the highway after it started dogwagging uncontrollably. The guy at the rock yard loaded everything in the back. Luckly those dump trailers are built like rocks and nothing happened to the truck or trailer. Kind of crazy looking behind you and seeing your trailer upside down.
thats a nice trailer, it would be handy for hauling wood...
my neighbor has one but it is a 16 footer and weighs 4000lbs alone! fill that bich up with wood and i think it'd be a little too much for my truck. lol
your setup sounds like it will work just fine... im sure you probably have some fancy math equation to figure out EXACTLY the skid steer goes in the trailer. haha
