What brand torque converter should I look into? What it be a waste if I put in the cams and a toque converter?

Save the money and buy something that goes fast later on. Older sports coup or a bike.

there are a few good ones out there. i just got myself an Edge Hemiverter TQ converter. it was $495, and it was custom built for my truck. you tell them all your truck specs, your current and future mods, and they set it up specifically for your needs.

It wouldnt be a waste at all to do a cam and a tq converter, and even gears. with all 3 of those together you would really be hauling a$$

Can you seriously do a cam, lifters and springs for under 500? what are you running? Some setups you need to run a custom tune dont you? Im gonna search and get some info here..

Since the OP said that the install would be free, here are the parts I can think of off the top of my head.

Push rods = $11
Springs = $61
Cam Bolt = $1
Crank Bolt = $3.50
Comp Cams 260 = $350

Right there, that totals about $425. That leaves you $75 for the fluids that you will need to replace with the swap. I don't think I missed any of the hard parts that are needed for the swap but if I did I am sure someone will chime in. The cam should run on a canned tune and since the OP said he has a tuner that cost isn't being added into the install.

Thats all right. Plus whatever plugs, wires, hoses belts he may need to change out while in there.

IDK though, if he is like me he will want (later on) a bigger cam or custom tuning. Maybe not though. Some people are happy where they are. Im not.

start with the basics, new plugs and wires with a throttle body cleaning will increase the pep!
