Default Muffler

As all of you know, I've tried A LOT of different muffler options. I guess I'm in the market for another muffler again. I've tried the magnaflow, and I've tried the flowmaster, and both mufflers had their flaws. The magnaflow just kinda hummed and didn't really offer the tone I was looking for probably due to its straight through design. The flowmasters on the other hand sound the best, but they kinda ruin the ride quality of a nice truck in my opinion. Do you guys know of any mufflers that are going to be tamed in the cab like a magnaflow but will offer a mean sound on the outside? I just kinda feel like the flowmaster downplays the great ride my truck delivers with all of the excess humming and hollering. I knew the flowmaster would consume the cab but it just sounds so darn good outside the truck, but I always get tired of it towards the end of the day. Your input would be of great value.

Sounds to me like you'd be the perfect candidate for a cutout... So you can either open it or close it depending on your mood swings...

There is not a muffler that will be loud out and quiet in! your best bet is to get a loud muffler and a set of ear plugs so you dont have to listen to it! OR insulate the hell out of your cab so you wont here the outside noise!

Multiple mufflers? Cutout? How many times you change that damn exhaust of yours?

You are all worried about running out of warranty and having to pay for repairs, hell, stop changing the same mod over and over again and you'd be able to pay for repairs!!!

Lol I know I know! Like I said fellas, I got it bad, real bad. Everybody who knows me picks on me how many times I change my mind on stuff in regards to my truck. I just kinda go with the flow I guess. So the Aero 3030 is supposed to sound mean but doesn't drone too bad? Don't they only offer that only in a single out version though? If so, would I have to buy a y-pipe to connect into my existing dual tailpipe exit?

You aren't going to buy a muffler that's loud on the outside that sounds quiet on the inside. If it's going to be loud outside it's also going to be loud inside the cab. I think you just have to pick if you like the stock exhaust more or if you like the Flowmaster more and stick with one of them.

Going to have to disagree with both of you on this one. YES you can have a loud muffler and have it be loud outside and quiet inside, you just have to run it correctly. Muffler type, muffler placement, pipe exit, and pipe length all play in as to how it is going to sound inside and outside the truck. For example, if the muffler was placed so that it is UNDER the cab of the truck with short pipes its going to be loud as hell outside and inside, if the pipes extend further back its going to get quieter outside and slightly less noisy inside. If the muffler was placed as far back as possible so it is NOT under the cab and the pipe length was shorter coming off the muffler then you would have a louder muffler outside and a lot less noise inside. Pipe exit is also a factor on how loud it is, dual out the back is going to be quieter than out the side before the rear wheels, dumped over the axle (NOT POINTING TO THE GROUND) is going to be quieter yet.

My muffler is a loud muffler BUT it is not noisey inside the cab, it is very loud outside though. My muffler is just before the axle so it is not under the cab, has a short 2ft length of pipe coming off it and is dumped over the axle pointing out not at the ground. the result is a nice loud mean sounding exhaust with a quiet cab ride (well... before the headers were put on but thats a different can of worms).

Also, you can alter the sound of your exhaust by adding a CAI and/or headers. With my original setup after installing a CAI the exhaust note sounded a lot deeper and more aggressive than it did with the stock box/resonator on. Headers just plain and simple make the exhaust really mean and more like muscle car.

Another way you can keep your truck quiet is to go Dynomat it. Put a layer under tha carpet, headliner and in the doors for inside and outside you can out it under your hood and I've heard, if you have enough room, you can put some under the cab by the exhaust pipe and it should quiet it down quite a bit. May be a good investment if you are that concerned about it being to loud.
