Default 96 to a 2003 ram?

I everyone, I curredntly have a 96 Ram 1500 5.9 SLT. I now have the option to upgrade to a 2003 Ram SLT. The 2003 Ram has a 4.7 and about 83000 miles, I can get the 2003 for just under $8k.

I have a few questions before I decide what I want.

First I was very intent on getting a Hemi, however this 4.7 is the right price, is the 4.7 fast or at least comparable to the hemi? i need a truck with a little pep to it.

Second question is how are they for has mileage? my 5.9 is a hog.

Third, I want to do dual wheel burnouts when possible, how can i tell if this truck has posi, or does anyone know which models came with the posi.

That starts it off, any help would be greatly appreciated.

The 4.7 is comparable in power to a bone stock 5.9, (4.7 is 235hp/295tq and the 5.9 is 245hp/330tq) and a solid motor. Unfortunately it lacks the aftermarket support the Hemi has, so there aren't many engine upgrades for it. No, the 4.7 is not fast, but you can still go pick fights with 5.4L F150s and send them home crying. Mileage, I get 13 city, 18-20 highway.. As far as the posi question, it wasn't standard on any model or trim, but an option, so it may or may not have one. There is usually a sticker in the glovebox with the gear ratio, it may tell if you if there is an LSD in there as well.

So they do exist, so basically if i wanted I could pull a diff off a posi 4.7 with the same gear ratio?

So I will be keeping about the same speed as my current truck with better gas mileage? sounds fine to me.

I have had my heart set on a hemi.... but 8 grand for this truck I don't think i can pass it up

You could pull the posi from any 9.25" Chrysler axle, but to be honest, if you're going to put a posi in, don't put a factory posi in your truck. The factory posi is pretty slack, and on occasion, disintegrates. Go for an Auburn or Detroit Tru-Trac.

Pyro you have been a great help so far, but do you think going into this wanting a Hemi and ending up with a magnum i will be satisfied with the truck?

I am a dodge man through and through and my 96 has served me well for 4 years but it is time to parts ways, this truck is the right price and very affordable but i dont want to buy it and be disappointed with it.

I dunno, I went truck shopping for a Hemi and bought a 4.7, and I like my truck. Maybe you will, maybe you won't. I made the same decision you did, price was right on a 4.7 and I couldn't find a Hemi in my price range.

I would keep looking because I think you could find a Hemi in your price range but thats just my opinion. If you really like the truck then purchase it!! I am happy to hear you are getting another Ram!!! My first truck was the 1996 Indy Pace Ram with the 360 and I loved it but after I got my second truck (2003 Hemi 2500) I was much happier with the power it had. That was just how I felt though.

Drive a Hemi truck and then decide. 345hp and 375lb/ft is quite a difference.
