Default Looking to get 1st RAM. Some ?'s on Mega Cab

Hi all -
I'm looking to move from my F150 to a new RAM Mega Cab. I'm looking at an '07 or '08. However I have some questions I'm hoping you can help with.

1) I hear the 1500's have an IFS which makes lifting more difficult than the 2500's solid front axles. Do the 1500 mega cabs have solid front axles? I thought I read they're a 2500 platform

2) If the 1500 Mega does have a solid front axle, what makes a 1500 different from a 2500?

3) Is there anything significant that should cause me to look at an '07 over an '08 and vice versa?

Thanks again. I'm excited to begin my search for one!

1) The 1500 Megacabs are built on the 2500 frame and have a SFA.
2) Dodge glued a 1 instead of a 2 in front of the "500" on the door. I think there might be some interior trim differences, but I'm not positive.
3) Year differences? Not really, but if you're looking at a MC Ram, especially if you get a hemi powered one, look for a truck with 4.10s in the axles, otherwise it will be a dog. A lot of MCs have 3.73 gears which is not enough gear for a truck that heavy.

The only difference I have heard is a "slightly" softer springs to make a smoother ride. That is all.

I have the 1500 Megacab 4X2 with the 3.73 rear end and I tow a 30 foot travel trailer weighing in at about 6500 lbs with no problems. I am considering upgrading to a heavier TT or small fifth wheel in the future and will most probably go with 4.56 gears.

Truck only gets about 11 to 12 mpg in mixed driving. Best I have seen is 14 straight high way.

2007 and 2008 are identical from what I can tell. Don't think there is any reason to want a 2008 over 2007 and vice versa.

Great truck!

i couldnt have said it better ptro. but i will add ...the reason you have a 2500 with a 1500 badge it so your insurance will be cheaper.

and a big plus 1 on the 4:10 in this truck...it weighs in at 8800 pounds empty. at least mine does. but then again im a 2500 HD but same monster just thicker springs

You beat me to it...

The other difference is the rear axle tube size. Megacab 1500's have a 3-1/2" OD axle tube, most of the other 2500's and 3500's have 4" OD axle tubes. I think the internals are all the same.

I've driven a mega cab all week (for work) - it is real nice, especially if you have people that need to ride in the back. The only problem with them is they need a little bit of a lift & 35's to look proportional... and that will kill the mileage.

Thank you very much for the informative replies. Its sounds like I should just go with the 1500 instead of 2500 more for cheaper insurance (all other factors seem the same expect for the .5" axle OD difference). Would there be any compelling reason to have to buy a 2500 MC over the 1500?

Last year we almost bought a Silverado 2500 Diesel as we were going to buy a 5th wheel too. We've moved those plans out for another couple years and looking for a bigger truck than my F150 SuperCrew in the meantime. We absolutely love the Mega Cab size (especially for the little kids).

Thanks

the difference in the 1500 vs the 2500 is ...more payloade, bigger front springs and more leafs in the rear and also a thicker frame. the 1500 will be smaller in all of those things. and yes big +1 on the size for kids .i put a roof flip down dvd plater for my little one with some wireless headphones ...perfect

Love my 08, but with my level and new tires I only get around 10mpg I live about 5 miles out of town so I dont exactly get highway mpg's. It doesn't have the MDS like the QC if you were wondering about that. It's the most comfortable truck I've ever had for both front seat and backseat.
