Thinking 4.56 Gears...
#21
Hey, if it doesnt fall apart on you after you're done, you can come up here and help me do mine!
Haha, but, take lots of pictures and come up with a write up. It would definitely help (or scare) people wanting to venture into the unknown and touching their gears. I know Johns transmission write up he did is an awesome addition to the wealth of knowledge already on here.

Chris,
Go for it. Just get your tooth pattern and torque correct and it will be fine. Talk to someone at a off road shop or racer types and find out who is doing gears and go have a talk with them. You might even volunteer to give him a hand with his next job to gain some experience.

yes everything ive been reading points in the direction. of making sure the tooth pattern is correct, and Backlash is Set right.. and most say to start with the original shim thickness, and go up and down, and adjust the shims.. Like start with stock then up a few thousandths, then down a few thousandths from stock, compare all patterns and ten adjust from there to get it PERFECT..
I think it will be time comsuming, but i can do it..

Hi Chris1530.
I got my 91/2" repaired over here in the UK and at the same time, installed a DTT LSD to get rid of the retaining clip problems I had.
I could'nt afford the 4:56's front and rear at the time. Wish I could have????? but that's another story.
What I will say is, that my installer did take his time, checking and rechecking the backlash & shimming etc etc, over and over again. To get the original pattern perfect.
It is as you say, very time consuming but, get it right with a little time spent here not rushing and you will have quiet gears.
Mine are as stock...........no humming or anything and the DTT is exceptional.
As you say "I think it will be time comsuming, but i can do it.." is bang on.
Take your time and remember when your that little bit frustrated, don't give up and say that'll do when checking the pattern.
Good luck and post up lot's of pic and.......maybe video for us not so competent back street mechanics????
