Unhappy Catastrophic Trans Failure.

I am at a loss of words here guys. Had to take the truck into a shop for this one, I wasnt about to touch it with a 10 foot pole. trans guy had me come back with him and we took it apart together and investigated what happened. He is telling me it wasnt due to the shift kit or torque verter or their installation, but i dunno. on a side note, my buddy that helped me on the install is a trans guy by trade.

so anyways, down to the nitty gritty. thrust bearings number 1 and 5 exploded. launching frag into the pump and everywhere else. the pump seized up while the tq verter kept spinning. (tq verter is F*#&ED) that generated enough heat to fuse most of the clutch packs in the input clutch together. and all the frag floating around did a number on the clutch carriers.

trans guy says he has seen this a couple times in his career. whether the part was already on its way out and the added stresses from the new parts put it over the edge, or it was already just a ticking time bomb waiting to go regardless, i dunno.

in slightly different but also bad news, while setting the trans up on a bench, i dropped my end and attempted to catch it, smashing me left hand ring finger. being an EMT/Fire Fighter, i know crushed bone when i see it. ill be on my way to the ER here pretty soon.

but in better news. i called up Andre over at Edge, let him know exactly what happened. he was pretty blown away. but he was AWESOME about this whole ordeal. He will be setting me up with a new converter free of charge! he even offered to come down and pick up the busted one! i will probably just take the wife's car and drop it off to him though.

i will go take some pics of the aftermath after i get my finger taken care of, and am over the shock this has created. seeing the damage done to the carriers, i dont think a rebuild is going to be an option. so any donations to the "Buy OlDirtyJohn a new Transmission Fund" are extremely welcome.

Sorry to hear about the ordeal. So they don't seem think this was related to the install?

that is correct. the trans shop thinks the parts were going to fail regardless. do I think installing the shift kit and tq verter may have caused it? unfortunately yes. whether it be a shoddy install, or the added stress of the new components, i do think it played a part. will i ever truly find out? no, im not CSI, nor is the shop.

im going to be getting a new tranny, and the replacement verter from edge and putting that in. might take a while though. which sucks cuz this truck is my DD

crappy cell phone pics dont really do it justice. but heres my finger, it swole up and turned colors immediately (sign of broken bone) and it throbs like crazy and shoots pain up my arm (sign #2 of a broken bone) and on top of that it tingles like its asleep (tell tale sign of a crush injury with nerve damage)

Oh man that sucks ***!!!!

Look into parts of the shift kit install. I have heard that there is a ring somewhere in it that if it is not put in right it can basically do what you are describing.

Personally when I get to mine I have ditched the Idea of doing a transgo kit and instead want to go with a sharadon stage two valvebody.

I hoope you canget it all worked out and fixed.
