Bad bad sounds
RTV, I got the heat resistant red colored stuff. I saw that used in a DIY video a while back.
Looks like the same stuff that was on mine from the factory. When I changed my gear oil a couple of weeks ago I put a gasket that I bought from Napa in there instead. That RTV (assuming that is what they had on it from the factory) is a pain in the @$$ to clean off! So far the gasket is working fine with no leaks. We'll see how hard it is to clean off when I change the fluid again.

Try this next time when cleaning off the RTV.
Stuff some lint free rag into the diff/gear housing. Then, get a portable electric hand drill with a fine wire wheel attachment.
Use this wire wheel to scrub away easily the RTV. Takes about 5 mins total for both faces.
Clean up the faces of the cover and diff housing with brake cleaner and use high temp RTV to re-seal.
