Default Is the 4.7 enough for the Ram 1500...???

I know the HEMI is the american bad boy for these Rams witht he 5.7 V8

But for all you 4.7 Owners hows the truck? Pickup good? is the engine to small for such a big truck? Just curious to see what you guys feel how the performance is with the 4.7 b/c its looks like im gunna get the 4.7 for gas milage purposes but i was wondering about the Power let me know guys you have been a great help

Also what Gears should i go with they reccomended ones or should i upgrade them for the extra $50.00 when i order the truck

I'm afraid you will be very disappointed if you get the 4.7 for better mileage. You won't get it. I drove a Dakota with the 4.7 for 4 years and currently have a Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 The dakota got worse mpg that my Ram and the jeep only get about 2 mpg better even though it's around 1000 lbs lighter.

I drove a rental QC 4x4 Ram with the 4.7 for 3 weeks before I purchased mine (other vehicle in the body shop). IMO 235 hp is not nearly enough for a 5500+lb vehicle. Continuous downshifts on slight grades and slow to pass.

The only advantage I see to getting the 4.7 over the hemi is that the 4.7 may to be a little more reliable. However, if you purchase while the 7/70 drivetrain is still in affect, this advantage won't make up for it's shortcommings.

Bottom line - search the varous Ram forums and you'll find many 4.7 owners who wished they had gotten the hemi. I don't think you'll find any hemi owners who wished they had gotten the 4.7.

I just realized this is your 2nd thread on the same issue. Ignore what I said above and in your previous thread. I don't know what I'm talking about. Your 4.7 will really get 25 mpg and pull harder that a CTD. Good Luck

With my exhaust and intake, if i baby the gas peddle i get 17mpg, when i drive like i want to (hauling ***) i get 14mpg, if any hemi guy says they get 14mpg haulin *** at every light theyre full of s***.... 4.7 is pretty good power...its no hemi, but its still got get up and go. however...if i was able to find a hemi in my price range i wouldve bought it without a doubt. another 110 hp....[&o]...but i am very pleased with my 4.7

Ibought the 4.7 (my 2nd ram 1500 quad cab, with the 4.7) and I love it. I have several friends who own rams with the hemi and the gas mileage is better with the 4.7, not by much, but a couple miles to the gallon more, especially if you accelerate slow and keep the rpms at 2000 or below. I personally think the 4.7 has plenty of power, its still an 8 cylinder engine...people act like its a 4 or 6. Just so you know if it helps, I traded in an 05 Chrysler 300c Hemi that was extremely fast so being I have the 4.7 and IMO it still has plenty of power in it.

I have an '04 4.7L reg cab and I think it's got plenty of juice. If you get 17mpg you are a lucky MF because with my Magnaflow exhaust and CAI I still only get around 12 if I baby it. 15 on the highway. But I also have a 3:92 rear in mine. The power is good in the reg cab, not sure about the quad but mine is also a 4x4 and it even has plenty of power in the sticky stuff. It's not my '01 5.9L by any stretch of the imagination but it will do

From what I've seen, the 4.7L doens't net you better mileage since it has to work harder than the Hemi. If you're considering a QC, 4x4 and like power, you may want to get the Hemi.

I have an '02 1500 Quad Cab w/4.7L V-8. The truck has plenty of power but DEFINITELY sucks gas. 2 mechanics I spoke with claim that they feel the engine is too small for the truck. It seems to downshift a lot on even slight inclines indicating its working hard to keep the rpms up. The HEMI has more power and probably has gets close to the same MPG. Right now, I average about 13-14 MPG on the highway which a lot of HEMI owners get.

Partly, how you judge the different engines in the truck is based on what you are used to. Bear in mind this is a heavy truck and considercomputing the power to weight ratio compared to that of whatever you have experience with. Then, decide which engine.

As noted, fuel mileage can be a complex issue. I can differ based on how hard the engine works and at what rpms it runs to do so, besides just engine size. For example, I typically drive sports cars over the road and when I increased to a 40% heavier car with 315% more power one would have expected fuel economy to plummet... NOT SO! At 72mph with cruise on it actually went up just over 10% because the first car was at 4000rpms and the latter at 1650rpms with adequate torque to it, even at that relatively low rpm range.

The bottom line is usually people wish they'd "gotten more," but seldom wish they'd "gotten less."

Next, drive whatever you are interested in. See for yourself, before you buy.

(btw, I've a hemi on-order)

All the best.

I did drive the Ram with the 4.7L RC 2WD before driving the Hemi. I thought it ran fine, but doesn't run like that Hemi for sure. The 4.7L is a damn good motor even in the Ram. Like avanti said

This is good advice.
