noticed after mt diff service a oil smell round the rear pumpkin . the service was great no shavings ect almost looked like new oil but since i had it open did it anyway . no leaks nothing , filled to 3/4 under the fill hole . do you think its just the old oil on the diff cover burning off?? kinda like if you spill oil on the engine how it smells and burns off??

do you have an axle seal leak leaking on your brakes or your pinion seal leaking and slinging to your exhaust?
look for slingage on your gas tank and bottom of your bed and so on

My first thoughts was leaky pinion seal slinging oil on the exhaust.
Also, make sure you didn't run over a plastic bag and it stuck to the muffler or exhaust somewhere's. The smell could just be a coincidence.

yeah burning oil near the rear pumpkin is really hard to do honestly. Look for any type of leakage on the exhaust, fom the tranny too the axle (rear). Also rh, that gear oil has a scent all it's own, down right nasty. you smell it once and you'll know what it is forever.

The diff oil smell is from the GL-5 additive. very distinct smell yes.
