Default Dual Exhaust for Dummies?

Hey yall.. I hope I don't get jumped all over for asking a question here, I admittedly don't know jack about cars/trucks.

My husband has a 05 Ram 1500 - he is in Afghanistan until September and mentioned that he wants to get dual exhaust for his truck. Everytime he deploys I surprise him with something when he comes home.. his first deployment the truck was the surprise. I'd like to get this exhaust thing done for him, but I literally don't even know what it means or where to begin.

If anyone could point me in the right direction and give me some info on the best way to go about this.. as well as how much something like this costs I'd be so greatful!

Kaycee,

I second the Thanks! to your husband!
First, dual exhaust just means you have two tail pipes coming out where you only had one before.
A true dual exhaust is where you have two mufflers and two tail pipes, where the normal (like factory) has one muffler and one tail pipe.
In most dual exhausts you get a new muffler and from the rear of the muffler they split into two tail pipes.
Personally I like the single muffler and a single tail pipe, which is usually larger in diameter and more free flowing (meaning the exhaust gets out of the muffler/tail pipe faster and more efficiently.
Here are a couple of websites to look at; It also depends on which engine he has, I assume it is the V8;

http://www.dynomax.com/part_view.php...DGE&smodel=RAM 1500&part=19413&engine=5.7

There are probably muffler shops in your area also that could help. Just give them a call.

this is what he might be talking about and magnaflow is a great brand, is it a 4 door or a reg cab truck? If you get this just find an exhaust shop or maby your machanic and have them weld it up.

Your husband has my thanks

That gives you a general idea of a dual exhaust. One pipe from the engine into a muffler and two pipes come out the other side of the muffler. I know down here in FL you can an exhaust shop make a dual exhaust setup with a magnaflow muffler and tips (those shiny chrome things that are near the rear bumper) for between $250-$350. that way you don't have to buy a $500+ exhaust system then pay to have someone weld it up for you.

Since you don't know too much about cars it's always best when calling to know kinda what you're talking about. Sometimes less than honest mechanics will see a woman or even a man for that matter that knows nothing about a vehicle and see dollar signs.

You want this kind of muffler. Like others have said single in dual out. Here's a picture of one for ya.

Hope this helps a little. Good luck and thank your husband for his service. Much respect.

+1 on the thanks for service. As a fellow military service member I know the money doesn't fall off the trees depending on rank. That is none of our business, so I just wanted to throw another option out for you:

http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/30467/10002/-1 $169.99

Two guys I work with who are limited on funds, have this system and it is very hard to hear the difference between this one as compared to some ridiculously overpriced pay for the name systems out there. I almost ordered one of the more expensive ones the other day and am now looking at this kit instead. I am sure he will be pleased with whatever you get done, as the thought and effort are a great gift in their own. Good luck!

The only thing about that system is that is for the '06-'08 trucks. The OP's husbands truck is an 05. I didn't see a jegs kit for an '05 on there. It may fit but I know a few things changed on the trucks between '05 and '06. Then she's gonna have to have someone relocate the spare tire from what I've read on there. Not to say it's a bad system, I've not had experience with it like you have. Just throwing out thoughts.

If OP's husband is from Canada, then he's well paid while on Tour along with not having to pay income-Taxes. I support both US and Canadian Troops in that Mission.
My point is that if OP is up North here then I would recommend any Minute Muffler as they are great at creating whatever you need for custom exhaust. I also recommend the Magnaflow Muffler too.

I'm down south, but the truck is actually being store in Maryland - but yeah, he is an American soldier - same deployment money benefits though, from the sounds of it [Yet still not NEARLY enough for what they do.. my husband is airborne infantry and he doesn't make half as much as he should for the stuff he does everyday!]

Thank yall SO much!! I really can't tell you how much I appreciate not only your fantastic help but also your kind words as well.. I will pass them on to my husband when I get to talk to him next!

I found a place in Baltimore that has good reviews - everyone has said that the exhaust work is great and the guy treats customers fairly. I was DEF worried about calling somewhere and it being SO obvious I didn't know what I was talking about and getting taken for a ride because of it. Wouldn't be the first time!

I'm glad this wont seem to be quite as much as I thought - I thought this was going to be a couple thousand dollars or something.

One last totally unrelated question - since this isn't going to be as much as I thought (I hope!) what would you recommend in the way of tires? His truck isn't 4WD and it doesn't sit off the ground as high as some of the 4WD models and I know that he wants it higher off the ground. Can I just put bigger tires on it or does it not work like that? We got an extended warranty and they told me when I bought it that lifting it would void the warranty. Is there a way to make it higher with tires alone or is that ridiculous?!

Thanks again!! Yall are wonderful
