Cruise control problem

2003 1500 4x4 cruise
Just got the truck back from diagnostics @ the dealer - they're telling me it needs a new PCM - there's a short causing the cruise to shut off -- $870 -- this is hard to believe, the only thing that doesn't work is the cruise and it needs a whole new PCM -- does that sound right?

A few months ago started having the same problem of cruise goes off at 5 mph. Under will turn on, above will turn off or not turn on. About every other week it will work properly. It would shut off randomly going down the interstate once in a while also. Mechanic going to check any codes while putting on new tires.
This is on a 2005 Ram 1500 with about 63,000 miles. I have 20 inch tires on - Any others having the problem with the bigger tires or is it a mix?

Well, seeing as this thread only resurfaces every 2 or 3 years I kinda don't think you're going to see a recall. Besides, it's rarely the PCM, about 75% of the time I've looked at it for people I've found a vacuum leak. Most often where the hose is pinched near the brake booster. Also check for cracked hose ends or a broken hose clamp...

Thank you Scott I will look into those systems, I do have codes for lean O2 sensors but I discovered that to be a vacuum leak behind the Intake manifold which I am having repaired tomorrow, I'll ask him to check those sensors while he does that.
