Question Brake Lights

Ok so I was thumbing through an old Truckin' magazine and noticed this bad boy. I have been looking at tail lights and can't really decide what I want to do. I don't really think tinted lights would look good but I also don't really like the clear/ chrome tails, but I noticed what this guy did and I am immediatly hooked. Thinking of painting both tail lights and the third brake light but I just have a few questions...

A) Are these illegal? If I only put one coat of paint over them do you think I will get a lot of police attention? (I live in Ohio) Also do you think one coat will make them too dark to see during the day?

B) Could I just buy the 5oz spray paint can of OEM matching paint and spray them? Would the color match well enough? If so I may also paint on some eyelids.

I dont know if you would get the result you want. painting blue over the red may yeild you with a purple looking light. do it any darker and then i doubt light will shine through. The law is your brakelights must be visible in perfect daylight from 500 feet away

Well I see where you are going with the whole color thing, never though of that. But what if I bought some clear tails with LEDs and painted them? Then the color issue would go away AND the LEDs would help with the brightness.

makes sense. only possible downside is you would ruin a good set of tails if it doesnt work. if youve got the $$$ it maybe worth a shot

Well I dont really have the money to waste lol but if for some reason it doesnt work I could probably just strip the paint and tint them a little bit and go with that for a while. Kinda win-win

I know for the vht night shade or whatever the spray tint is you have to scuff up the plastic a little bit for it to stick on, do you think that would have to be done here too?
