After seeing that astronomical number I think I will just suck it up and change them myself.
Thats pretty close to what I was quoted and I have two 5.7's. So ya I sucked it up and did both cars for $60. The ram was pretty tough to get at a couple but the 300c was easy, all wide open.
thanks guys for the responses, I have an 07 4.7 which has 8 plugs. I just need to get a gap spacer thing and make sure I do that correctly. Its always good to learn something new and I enjoy it very much.
Its true they are aggravating to change but we are not the only one that knows that so thats why it cost so much to pay someone else to do it. So i will keep changing my own.
My time is worth ~$400 to me, that plug change and wipers is all of $50-60 in parts. The dealer quoted me $1k for the 30K tune up. I ended up getting Mag-hytec trans pan and diff covers and doing the work myself and still came up $300 ahead on the tune up. The added benefit is when you do the work yourself you now have more knowledge of your truck, and can better diagnose issues if/when they come up.
I changed them last night and it took about 2 hours, it wasn't to bad and taking off the stock air intake really made me want a new cai even more since the sock one is bulky and not the best looking thing.
a friend just spent $424.00 to have his 16 plugs changed, oil change and wipers... It was worth the couple hours for the cash saved!
If I made $212 an hour, I would be having the dealer replace the plugs on my Rolls-Royce Phantom. I would just sell the Ram and buy a new one every time it needed any maintenance, including an oil change....
good trick to, to get the plugs out of the heads is use a piece of heater hose or i used an old coil boot from a honda and stick that down the spark plug hole and push it on to the plug and pull the plug out.. works good for installing and removing. because the actual " spark plug sockets" don't sometimes work to good for removing the plug.
