First off. Why are you trying to recalibrate? What is the issue? It may be that your T/B is no good! Please answer questions.
As far as re-calibration, it is correct that you only need to turn the ignition to the run position and NOT start. It learns itself automatically. No pressing the pedal is needed.
Hammer, the dinging your buddy prob got was when he reset the oil light...lol?? It will ding after the pedal is pressed 3 times to alert the driver that the oil light has been reset.

I put the superchip 3865 tuner on my truck and am currently adjusting shift points to get it how I like. In the data logging menu both the throttle position sensor display and accelerator position sensor display show 5% to 10% when I don't have my foot anywhere near the pedal. Since my in-town driving is very light throttle anyway I don't want this to cause incorrect shifting at light throttle.
So far I've tried turning the key to on position without starting and slowly pushing in and letting out the pedal to reset it. If I only have to turn key to on position without depressing pedal as you say, dirtydog, then that may indicate that my sensors are bad. I will check my data log tonight to see if there has been any change.
I can answer any question you want. Yours was the first question.

Both APPS and TPS have redundant sensors in them to ensure safety and accuracy of the drive-by-wire system. If there are any discrepancies then limp-mode is immediate. I believe the TPS is also measured in degrees (90* = wide open) and is mis-interpretted as %. The small % you are reading is the minimum position of the throttle-body and pedal. You can force them to 0 by hand, but are spring loaded to open slightly.
