I know what you are talking about and it is not the safest way of doing it. Usually we set the rear frame on jack stands with the rear wheels either removed or off the ground. Then use a jack under the axle to adjust the hieght to get the shackle to line up.

When i put on my lift shackles I used a 3 ton floor jack and put a 4*4 between it and the bottom of the hitch and lifted there. That way you were at the very back of the truck and lifted the frame up from the axle.

all i did was lift my truck up high enough to unload the spring. removed the tires, removed shackle bolts, put in new shackle, and put back together (with new shocks of course).....
where does the bottle jack, floor jack, or 4x4 come into play? lol.

Well the bottle jack goes between the axle and frame and unloads the frame wieght from the spring. The floor jack lifts the frame wieght, both basically unloads the shackle. The 4x4 was just used to give the jack a little more hieght and distribute the load on the hitch a little. The Bottle of Jack was to make doing it more interesting.
