someone chime in
hey guys,
i was looking around town for a posi for my truck. its a 2wd that only one tire spins when im stuck and what not.
anyways some shop will sell my a Rebuilt Posi for 735, now rebuilt posi? good thing or bad?
also another guy said he'll sell me a detroit locker between 500-800.
now my big question is whats the difference between the 2. is one better than they other.
i'd like to know from people with knowledge or experience.
now that thats settled i also want to know about mud tires, since with this posi i can go places and i enjoy hunting and want to have some fun in the mud but i'm stuck between 2 tires. the BFG mud terrain or this tire i haven't heard of called "Nokian Vatiiva M/T". which ones would you say is a good mud tire?
thanks

How much road usage are you planning on doing? If you bought a 2WD I am assuming you aren't planning on using it off road a lot. If you put a full on locker in the rear end, turning sharply on asphalt is going to make the inside wheel 'skip'. I have a friend who had a detroit locker in his rear and it use to pop sometimes on asphalt when making turns. I personally wouldn't put anything rebuilt in. Have you looked into LSDs? I like the BFG M/T, never used the Nokian. I had the BFG on my '72 CJ 5 but there is a huge weight difference but I never got stuck because of not having an aggressive enough tire.
The price was too good to turn down on the truck. So what your saying is the locker isn't all that great, and for a posi I should get a brand new one. And don't mind me asking why not the rebuilt posi?
Because he's RIPPING YOU OFF!!! A rebuilt Posi is one that has failed or has had the clutch packs wear out. They usually rebuild them by replacing the clutch packs but nothing else. If done correctly, they can last close to as long as a new one, BUT that's assuming all else is in perfect shape. You can buy the best two LSDs (Posi if you are a GM guy) for about $400 and $500 BRAND NEW. Don't touch a Mopar one, they are crap.
Just get you an Auburn LSD or Detroit TruTrac and be done with it.
A locker is only a good idea if you are NOT using the truck as a daily driver as they will "ratchet" on you on turns.
As far as the tires go, there are a TON of better choices than the BFGs which are cheaper. I've never heard of the Nokian and I've been off-roading since well before I was old enough to have a drivers' license and I'm 44 now...

They are both silent and awesome. They function differently though. The Auburn uses clutch packs, the TruTrac uses gears. Theorhetically, the TruTrac has no life limit, while the Auburn's clutches can wear out (thus why they do rebuilds). However I've had the Auburn on both my 2nd Gen Ram and now my 3rd Gen and never came close to wearing one out. Plus side on the clutch type is they can react faster. Rule of thumb is off-roaders tend to get the TruTrac for longevity and street/strip guys use the Auburn both because you can get slightly faster lock-up and secondly because they make a "PRO" model with a higher bias than the TruTrac (meaning HARDER lock-ups).
The TruTrac used to have a limit of 33" tires, which is why I've always used the Auburn, but I believe they are now good to at least 35".
You really can't go wrong with either.
If you want to read more, I've got a little blurb on LSDs in the FAQ section...

alot of 2wd guys get air lockers. They perform great off road and you can just turn them off when you decide to get back on the road. They are kind of expensive though and can break more easily

I would definitely steer away from a locker in the rear end. LSD is the way to go unless you are off-road a lot with the truck. As a daily driver you really don't need a locker. The reason I stay away from parts that are rebuilt is one, I am in the military and everything is pretty much rebuilt and the equipment seems to never quite work right. Secondly is because you don't know what broke and if all the broken pieces were fixed. You don't know what else is not broken but weakened due to the forced failure of the product. Just because what actually broke was fixed doesn't mean that everything else is good to go. Just my two cents on that...I would do a couple searches in the forums and read about problems people are having with different products from Lockers to LSDs and go from there, and as always do some research on the pricing of the different products to fit your budget.
