Shocks: 2003 Quad Hemi
How difficult is it to replace shocks on a 2003 RAM 1500 5.7 Hemi? I've never replaced shocks but have tools/air tools for this.
I fit under the truck, will I need to jack the truck up?
Do the rear differ from the front when replacing?
Any tips?
People here seem to like Bilstein shocks, but I use my truck for non-commercial use and rarely haul/pull anything. Are Bilstein a bit much for casual driving?

The springs support the weight of the truck, so you don't necessarily have to, but it is MUCH easier to install new shocks when the suspension is at full sag. Reason being, you will have to compress the new shocks much more to get them into place when the suspension is loaded. A real PITA. The more distance you can get between the mount points, the better. I would also recommend removing the lower mounts first, allowing the shocks to decompress downwards instead of up. It may not make any real difference, I just think it's easier.

I have an 03 QC Hemi and recently replaced defective/worn out Rancho RS5000 shocks.
Soak the front lower mount bolts with PB blaster or some other freeing/anti seize lube.
The front lower bolts can be a pain to remove due to corrosion/rust etc.
Bilsteins are good but, I replaced my old Rancho RS5000 with the Bilstein HD shocks and I have a much harsher, less smoth ride. I really feel every bump now.
But, I do have better handling....just the truck is much stiffer lol.

Nah, I think it's the "driver" lmao
I replaced mine on the 2003 4x4 a few months ago, didn't have to jack it up but had the front wheels off and the rear, had to lower the spare. On a 4x2, I would def jack it and of course be safe, get some jack stands under there. Also as Al said, I put PB Blaster on mine the night before, you'll def need it if they're the stock shocks.
I decided to go with the Rancho, the ride is great IMO, and cheaper.
and Al, if you want a less harsh and smoother ride, have your wife drive

I replaced mine, front and back last night. 05 sc/sb 4x2. Had to jack up each front control arm to put the new shocks in, and the frame on each side of the rear to let me have a fighting chance on compressing the rear load leveling shocks enough to get the bolt through the bottom. Took about 1 hour including beer and potty break.
