Default Getting a new car... sometime this week! (long post)

As the title explains I'm getting a new ride. But do not fear! As the Ram is sticking around. Basically since the gas is killing me up in Tampa with my commute to school my parents decided that maybe I should get a different vehicle. So my dad is going to trade in his 2000 Malibu and then I'll give him the truck. So as for what I'm getting. As of right now it will be a 2008 Dodge Avenger R/T. And this thing is loaded. I'm talking basically every option on the list and its a good price too... but thats because it has 67,5XX miles on it. The mileage would worry me but seeing as how in 2.5 years I've only put 14K on the truck it doesn't bother me too much. Thoughts? Anything to worry about (such as the mileage). I'm asking here because the Avenger forum is basically dead and I know some of you have DDs that aren't your truck.

Edit: Funny story I wanted to add that I overheard at one of the dealerships today. A lady called in and was asking if the dealership was selling any cars with 400,000 miles on it. That's right, four hundred thousand miles. I laughed when I heard the salesman repeat the number to the lady.

Well, I don't have an Avenger or another Dodge, but I wouldn't worry about the mileage too much. A car that age, with that many miles, is mostly a highway warrior and not a stop and go commuter. As long as it has been maintained properly, it will be fine.

That said, I am not that big a fan of big 3 cars, at least not as much as the trucks. There are many models I love, but probably wouldn't buy because I'd worry about how long they'd last.

Sorry to see you go man, hope you still hang around this forum, and good luck with that Avenger.

the r/t is a nice ride but dont expect to get a lot better than a stock 2wd ram. we bought one for my girlfriend a 2008 too and she got about 16 mpg with it out of the 3.5 v6 best we saw was about 22 on a trip. thats about the same as a nice big 2wd ram. the 4 cylinder one does better i had customers when i worked at the dealership get about 24 mpg out of it. if gas mileage is killing you why did you lift a 2wd six inches?

Yeah I know what you're saying, bought my mom a 2010 Journey 3.5 V6, "rated" at 27 mpg and it's getting about the same 19 mpg that my V8, 4x4 Jeep Grand Cherokee got before I lifted it and put bigger tires on it.

In this day of building vehicles for better fuel economy, lower emissions, etc. I don't think they are doing very well.

What people don't realize is that there is NO regulation on what a company designates a vehicle to get in gas mileage, the EPA simply takes the numbers given them by the manufacturer. Toyota has been accused for years of "inflating" their EPA MPG numbers...

When you buy a car used, it doesn't matter if the manufacturer is American. The dealer is the one getting all the benefits.

None-the-less it's great to see more Dodges out there. Those Avenger R/Ts are beautiful cars.

Well since I'm getting about 8-9/14-15 (based on the computer) now pretty much anything will be an improvement. I would be fine with the 2.4L but the V6s have the 6 speed so I'm hoping that'll pay off plus the only 2.4s weve found were all 2010s and out of our price range. Plus this thing is nice. It has sunroof, nav, boston stereo system and the rear seat dvd (not that I need it)

Yep, I'd guess you're gonna see about 8-10 mpg more out of that car. Not a bad move for college fuel economy. When my step dad passed I got to use his Hyundai Accent until I could sell it for my mom, 4 speed manual, 4 banger and I got crazy good mileage out of it, like 40 on the highway, 33 in all around use. I almost kept it for myself, but at 6'3" and about 300 lbs at that time (thankfully I've got my fat a$$ down under 250 now), I just couldn't fit in the thing plus no way could I justify THREE vehicles and no way I was selling the truck or the Jeep.

10'ish city and 15'ish highway is about all you can expect to see out of a QC Hemi with a lift and large tires, especially with those heavy a$$ 20" wheels, even in 4x2 flavor. It's a good move for you (and even a better move for your dad, LOL)...

I hate to tell you, but if you want MPG's and a car that wont fall apart, I'd have to say Honda..

I know i might get some flak for this, but I traded in my 2004 Honda Accord EX-V6 with a 6 speed manual for my ram.

I owned the car for 3 year and out in 25,000KM.... 1 of those year my license was suspended. That car is amazingly fast for a 3.0L. I ran 1/4mile in 14.3 and 0-60 in 5.9 sec. thats only around a tenth a second slower than advertised.. anyways, I never had problems with fuel economy, with the 6th gear I can cruise at 60kph no problem, and i dont have to down shift to keep up with traffic. I beat the living crap out of it, If i drove my ram the same way i drove that Accord It would be dead already.

For cars I feel that the Japanese know how to make them better than anyone else. Especially Honda, that is just my personal opinion. They also tend to hold value better as well. but anyways, goodluck with whatever you chose.

1 more thing, i averaged about 8L/100km or something like 25 MPG..... that is when i wasnt driving like a lunatic
