4.7 towing
#11
I used to tow my RV with an 04 quad cab 4x4 4.7L truck. Scaled at 4400lbs on the trailer axles. Now the RV has a taller profile, more wind drag. I towed in mountains and a bit on the praries. I had a tow package, and the 3.92 gears with factory 20inch wheels. (factory size rubber, about 33") Against wind she would just keep around 55-60 mp/h. On the steep grades, lucky to do 30mp/h... maybe 40 on lesser ones. Flat land, no wind I could get up to passing speed of 70. Mileage, a solid 9-10mpg.
Will your truck do it, yes. Will it do it well, no. It will be slow. If I keep it around 50-55 with my setup it did a bit better on fuel. For a 1 shot tow you'd probably be fine. Estimate 9mpg towing... doing a reasonable 50-55. My 2500 hemi still only gets 9-10 towing the same RV. Most gas rigs are in that range. for any hill, rev that 4.7 up and run the hill a bit. It'll want to rev to make power...

I pull my race car all over with my 07 2wd 4.7 quadcab with factory 20s. Car weight is 3k trailer is 1900 than add in all the usual tools and gear and its few extra hundred pounds. I put it in tow haul mode and its fine on flat roads hold 65 easily and it gets 11-12mpg average. Now when I hit some hills it struggles some and fuel mileage suffers, but this truck tows alot better than my 96 extended cab with the 5.9l magnum. So yes it will do it

hey guys
im getting ready to buy a 01 trans am ws6 from lexington ky, i am located in albany, ny. the trip is 800 miles. my truck is only a crap 4.7. my manual says i can tow 7500lbs. the trailer is 2000lbs and the car weighs 3500lbs. so its only a total of 5500lbs. i just was wondering if anyone else tows with a 4.7 and what kind of gas milage i can expect. the truck can barely get out of its own way as it is, im scared to tow with it haha.

I tow anything that I hook to my truck. Granted mine came from the factory with a manual trans, and 3.92 gears, but I still have had it way over capacity. Took a trailer full of broken up concrete driveway to the fill pile 30 miles away-scaled at 26,000 lbs, and was able to do 50 on the flat, uphill was another story. It is whatever you feel comfortable doing.
The fuel mileage will be a good bit better with the Chevy. Auto or manual?
Rent a tow dolly, and disconnect/tie up the driveshaft. Much less weight, mine weighs 370lbs.

My theory. Since YOU are getting a car for YOU, take your truck-if something breaks, you have to fix your own truck. If you take your buddy's truck, and something goes wrong, YOU still have to fix HIS truck, or at least chip in, and that would suck.

26,000 lbs? That thing would be on the bump stops and would probably rip the tow hitch off of the truck completely. Anyone who actually tows on a regular basis will tell you that 8k lbs. is pushing the comfort level in a 1/2 ton. To scale 26,000 lbs. the tow weight would be around 18-19,000 lbs. That is insane and definitely illegal/stupid. There would be no way of stopping that load if you ever got it moving with the 235 hp 4.7L.

i recently towed my wifes car (a 2008 ford focus) from michigan over to washington state with my completely stock, besides trailer brakes, 04 ram with the 4.7. i was getting about 10-12 mpg the entire time. and i was also cruising at about 70 or so. now going over the pass was different any hill i would hit i would drop my speed to 50 or so. but it can definately do it
