Im in the process of rebuilding my rear end. Ive never done this before but I am very competent when it comes to just about anything mechanical. Im taking it slow so I dont mess anything up in the tear down process. My pinion bearing went out and caused it to try to climb the ring gear and busted a tooth on the ring gear. Chewed up the exciter ring and some of the shims are broken. Any tips that could make my life a little easier during this rebuild? Anything, any tricks I should know? Thanks for any help.

This thread came at a good time! What was your torque sequence on your side adjusters? Manual calls for 75 ft/lbs, but read other 4x4 site, and some stated up to 150 -200ft/lbs .http://www.ringpinion.com/TechnicalH....aspx?TipID=11 . The weird thing.... was when I loosened the side adjuster to pull the carrier out, I simply backed the adjusters out with a flick of a screw drive from the small access hole.

Is yours a trac-lok? Are you doing the rebuild with the diff in the truck?

Hmm, how about you ask me the questions and I will do my best to help you out?

I needed a big mother 3/4 inch drive johnson bar to tighten the pinion nut to the required preload.

The used rear diff i purchased for rebuild was very very grungy inside I used oven cleaner, a toilet brush taped to a wooden broom handle for inside the axle tubes and a nice strong pressure washer. LOL

Please shoot me a pm or ask in this thread?? I do have more pics too.

My manual said 75. I torqued each adjuster to about 10 ft lbs with the required backlash. I then tightened the right side to 75 ft lbs and checked backlash. It was close, however when I went to tighten the left side adjuster it was much too loose and I had to start all over again I played with the left and right adjusters until I had the right backlash while maintaining a 75 ft lb torque on each adjuster. Hope this is clearer than mud for ya. Let me know. I can copy and paste from the manual I have.

When making adjustments on the side adjusters for the backlash, make sure the whole ring and pinion is turned over several times forward and several times in reverse.
I read that that centers the whole assembly after adjustments have been made and seats the bearings correctly. Thus aiding in setting the backlash.

I applied that process as well.

I had a minor setback, my homemade tool for the adjusters broke. I have to wait til my neighbor gets home to re-weld it with a new grade 8 bolt. I'm hoping i can get some good gear patterns later today.

I found a very good write up on setting gears on a jeep forum a little while ago, definitely worth a read if you're going to attempt the job yourself.
