Coil issues sputtering
Hey everyone, I'm new to posting kind of new to searching this forum. Although I didn't find what my problem was here, I found out what it wasn't. I thought I'd post some info.
My 2002 ram 2500 p/u 5.9 gas engine would sputter a little after it warmed up. Got to the point of not starting. After checking codes I got multiple misfire codes and p0442 and p0455. So I decided to do plugs and wires. Ok, great. I'm running. Then occasionally with the truck at idle, the idle was rough. A little gas and it sputtered and recovered. It was getting worse. Even not starting. Then at times, it ran fine. With the forum, I ruled out the map and tps sensor. Checked codes again. No misfires, but still had p0442 and p0455. I chased those codes. Gave up on that. So over 1 weeks time since changing plugs and wires, it started sputtering again. Had to be misfiring. Once, when attempting to start, white smoke came from the air box. Long and short, my coil was the issue. Changed it out, and now I'm back. Most of what I was looking for online made it seem that the coil would be good or bad. Not much in between. Not true. Also, after inspecting the coil closer, it had some rust corrosion. Hope this helps

The EGR valve will also make it act the same way when it's getting clogged.
One thing I left out. When i did a visual on the coil, it had some rust. After pulling it, it had a visible crack on the bottom. If I had only used a mirror to view the bottom of the coil, i would have been more confident it was the problem.

No sorry it dosent. You stated that you noticed the rust on the coil and you changed them and then you were back to square one then you stated again that you inspected the coil and noticed a crack..... you then said that you would have been more confident that if you would have saw the crack the first time you would have know that was your problem.
Well until you let us know that hey i changed coil #4 with the crack in it and now i have no problems, then its up in the air to all of us that tried to help and to the people that come to view the site just for help.
And the OP is the first post so i know for sure that didnt have your resolution in it.

My apologies for the long post, but the original post says," long and short, my coil was the issue". Another said "changed it out, and now I'm back". You may have jumped to the end. From now on,I'll put the answer at the end. It was the ignition coil. I replaced it, and the truck runs well

Not many people post a problem with the solution all in one post
Usually it takes a little while before someone can figure out there problem.
Gald you did find your problem.
