I am still assuming you have the OEM Radio correct?
Occasionally (and I really mean Rarely) I have seen the actual tuners go bad inside of OEM radios, where the copper coil (tuner) and/or the receiver arm wears out, or corrodes (usually in convertibles specially if they are near the beach), unwinds or solders fail.
But aftermarket radios have crappy AM reception no matter what.
