Default 4WD slow to disengage

Guys/Gals.
First post, new here. I have a 2006 1500, Hemi. 95,000 miles. It goes right into 4WD, but when you go back to 2WD the light flashes and doesnt go out until you come to a complete stop.
Is there an actuator or something that needs replaced or maybe something i can do to easily fix this?

Thanks in advance.... Jason

I had the same problem after a front-end accident. I flushed the front diff and it made a huge difference.

Although, I didn't have the light problem you describe. 4WD indicator would go off, but it would take 1 or 2 miles of driving for the 4wd to disengage, usually with a big thump. After changing fluid, no thump and much quicker disengagement.

read your owners manual! It's not good to switch out of 4wd when moving.....the 4wd module will not switch out of 4wd until certain conditions are met so this is normal operation...

I always stop before switching into and out of 4x4... the manual says you can do it while traveling under 5mph but I never want to risk it...

I can be moving for 4Hi, but I also have a 2nd gen...

Maybe you have a vacuum problem? I don't know if the later trucks used the vacuum system the 2nd gens did.

Jason,

Here is what the owners manual says.

Preferred Procedure

1. With engine RUNNING, slow vehicle to 2 to 3 mph (3
to 5 km/h).
2. Shift the transmission into NEUTRAL (depress clutch
on manual transmissions).
3. While still rolling, rotate the transfer case control
switch to the desired position.
4. After the desired position indicator light is ON (not
flashing), shift transmission back into gear (release clutch
on manual transmissions).
Alternate Procedure
1. Bring the vehicle to complete stop.
2. With the key ON and the engine either OFF or
RUNNING, shift the transmission into NEUTRAL (depress
clutch on manual transmissions).
3. Rotate the transfer case control switch to the desired
position.
4. After the desired position indicator light is ON (not
flashing), shift transmission back into gear (release clutch
on manual transmissions).

NOTE: If steps 1 or 2 of either the Preferred or Alternate
Procedure are not satisfied prior to attempting the shift or
if they no longer are being met while the shift attempt is
in process then the desired position indicator light will
flash continuously while the original position indicator
light is ON, until all requirements have been met.

There are many variables including which transfer case the OP has, manual or electronic. I guess the best thing to do would be to check the owners manual which can be found at the link below. For the 2006 the directions start on page 308.

Very true about reading the manual.
Can't go wrong there.
