Tires are rubbing due to the width ( 12.5). How is a lift kit going to help . I'm confused.

Yes - it's the width. '04s are torsion fronts = more room. '06 and newer are coil overs = less room.

Spacers would solve the problem, but I'm also of the camp that would never use them. Yeah, I know LOTS of guys who have them and never had a problem BUT have seen them fail too.

Wheels with 4.25 - 4.5" backspacing would solve the problem - correctly...

Does anyone know the minimum thickness spacer required for clearance. Its a 2008 1500 SLT 4WD. Tires are 12.5 wide 35 H with 20" wheels. If the required spacer is 1/2 inch or less I would be inclined to go that route

Have someone cut the wheels while you are in a position to see where/how much they rub. Probably be alright with 1/4" spacers...

You didn't specify in your original post. I assumed you were rubbing your wheel well lining.

I wanted to chime in on spacers:
I've been using 1.5inch adapters on my Ram, with a full lift and 4.5 inch backspaced tires -12 offset. These adapters have survived jumping, high speed off roading, and everything else me as a 17 y/o highschooler put it through.

And to think......... I was driving a 1987 Plymouth Lazer with no reverse when I was 17!!!

Bet ya they are rubbing on the front bumper lower valance. A wheel spacer will not help, might make it worse. Just trim the lower valance a bit.
