how to disconnect MDS on 08 Ram???
My old man traded an non-mds ram for the new model year when they came out with it (end of lease) and with the exact same truck, tires, 4x4 and driving habbits, he saw about 2mpg more on the highway. He actually saw the biggest gains coasting back in forth in traffic after work on secondary roads when it kicked in quite a bit. Might not seem like much but if getting anywhere from 10-20% more, probably adds up to $500+ a year for many.
To be honest I saw no gain or loss in city driving with or without MDS and a slight gain on the highway with it turned off. So the system in my mind is junk and the fact that it doesn't provide consistent gains for everyone adds to its unreliability
Yea I only had MDS shortly after the lift and tires went on. Maybe about 5 months. Then I got my tuner and shut it off and saw gains on the highway only. City was still the same.
5w-30 is too thick for the MDS solenoids and has been proven to damage them over time.
The tach will jump 300rpm when the MDS kicks it. The PCM partially unlocks the torque converter when in 4cyl mode.
As mentioned, you can drive in tow/haul mode which, along with disabling the MDS, also raises the 2-3 and 3-4 shift points and locks out 5th gears. A tuner such as Diablosport or Superchips will also let you turn it off.
It does increase mpg at about 60mph or less, above that, the wind resistance is too much for it too stay engaged long enough to do any good.
